Hiya, RM-H! Re (1), perhaps a straight woman would be more forgiving than I am, but I can't help thinking that if we're going to be seeing more of Jack "out of that boring uniform," Owen McDonnell needs to spend a bit of time in the gym! Re (2), I'll stay away from plot specifics for the same reason you did, but I will say it's been odd watching a boy-girl couple do the "U-Haul" thing. Simone's paired with a man this time, but in that respect she STILL winds up playing a lesbian! LttP |

You are so right about SL playing the lesbian even when she's not. As further evidence - she's still on top. In vague reference to the plot turn in Ep 5, I note where you two catch the resonance, but I'd hear it lots more if Evil Mr. Publican was involved instead of the Sean wannabe, Brian. Using my Bad Girls Concordance if Jack = Nikki then Pub Landlord = Fenner. Finnbar may be Denny. Such classics as "Brian an' I splut up" and "It's over" give considerable more amusement value for me. Gads I hope Gemma is not devolving into a clinging girlfriend and source of all Jack's upcoming anguish. I can see why he swaps out a new squeeze each series - they probably all leave him. |

Ep 4 actually had more resonance for me because the dialogue was just so on-the-nose. The scene with Brian in the car especially but it was the "take things slowly" NOT! that finally sent me into a giggle fit I was more impressed that they didn't go the predictable route with Jim. I ended up enjoying his character a lot. Ep 5 the Gemma/Brian stuff was just as tired as their relationship. And they still don't make any sense to me as a couple. As for Jack's former lovers: the first turned out to be his half-sister (not kidding!), the next was a hot doc from England that was way too good for Jack so definitely left him, and the last was the infamous Moira. I liked her OK but Jack would have to go back to Dublin to make it work. Moira has a great career going in the Garda so no way would she give that up to live with Jack in that frozen over little town. The "self righteous little prick" is just not worth it. That leaves us with Gemma who seems to want a fresh start far away from Manchester. The question is why and I don't think we will get an answer to her history in this last part. That's why I'm somewhat hopeful that she will be back if there is another Series. I think they are doing a good job so far at not making her "a clinging girlfriend" but it will be interesting to see how they finally rid themselves of Brian. Besides, Jack has always done a fine job at causing his own anguish with his own impulsiveness & hotheadedness. He's never needed help in that department. As for Owen McDonnell and the gym: I have to admit I like that he is a bit doughy. It's refreshing that neither Owen or Simone look the usual over-groomed Hollywood plastic. I believe them as the people they are supposed to represent. I am shallow enough to say that I wish they would find some better concealer for under Simone's eyes though. *shrugs* |

Cerulean Seas...I tend to agree with you about Owen and Simone. I enjoy seeing Simone in anything and everything she does, but in this series she looks totally stressed out and exhausted, so a little makeup help under the eyes would be welcome. Unless, of course, she has the look that is wanted by the writer(s); one never knows...*smiling*... in which case, I give Simone even more high marks than I already do. I do thank you very much for the links... I checked amazon.co.uk to see if the series is available on DVD. The only think I found was #single-handed, series one.# It's going to be a long wait for series four... Happy Christmas everyone! |

Thanks for the back story ... kind of makes me wonder if we really *want* Gemma to stay with Jack, except for the Simone factor. The man does have some issues to deal with. I think those Garda jackets are one-size-fits-all - infinitely expandable as the beer belly grows, but Jack doesn't seem that pudgy to me - given age and circumstances. As for where the story is going - my fear is that she is the plot device to get Jack suspended and the story will now revolve around his relationship with the Garda rather than his relationship with her. |

Unfortunately, I don't have time to make any real contribution to this thread, but just really wanted to remind people that Simone was filming SH literally just days after the funeral of her niece - I would have been more surprised not to see her looking "rough" around the edges to be honest. |

Hi all Since the rights holders after all this time still haven't seen fit to make these readily available I'm leaving the first 3 movies that make up what ITV weirdly call Series 1-3. Just when I'm annoyed because this show can be boring predictable with stock characters like Costello they throw a slight curve...it's nothing earth-shattering but it's different in a pleasant sort of way. And the scenery is nice. I wouldn't mind seeing more of this series especially if Simone gets to stick around. This last part is broadcast, not digital, quality but it'll do for a watch and I'll try to remember to upload a higher-res version when it comes online Friday. I'm glad people here have enjoyed this. I was happy to share ![]() http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O3IJAOW9 Episode 6 |

I downloaded the episode and watched it this afternoon. I thought the resolution was perfectly fine. Thank you again for the links. The last scene would lead you to believe that Simone would be back. Does anyone else have the same impression?

Well, dang...the resolution on the digital copy is better but the audio is whack in several places so I think what's posted already is as good as it's gonna get. And I'm with you, yankeelady, it looks like they are making a spot for Gemma if another Series is commissioned. I'm happy about that. I like the character & they have left lots of questions and room for character development. Here's hoping Simone & the production co. can close a deal so we don't have another situation like "Monarch of the Glen" on our hands. |

If I remember properly (always an issue), I think it was Simone's pregnancy that ended her "Monarch of the Glen" association. It was publicized as a jointly held decision. Here we have Simone...looking tired and a little stressed with a bit of weight gain...hmm. All of these things in and by themselves are really not issues...but one never knows if history will repeat itself.

By which you mean Costello is willing to negotiate? I think the young girl - Maread? - was the most interesting character in the bunch. Good on her to rat out Costello and save Mr. Garda's bacon. Sadly. since I'd love to see more Simone, her happy chirpy last scenes left me thinking she could just as easily disappear without a mention if there is another series. It seems like the only dramatic tension left is between Jack and his mother. Or better put: why would we want to watch her being the supportive mate to Jack? |

By which you mean Costello is willing to negotiate? No. I didn't write my sentence very clearly. Sorry. I meant the overall story, really. Costello knows how to play all the angles so his agreement with Jack wasn't a surprise. Jack looks like he is finally getting wise to all the angles too so now I guess we get to see how far Jack is willing to go down the road to being like his Father in running the Guarda D. And, I agree about Mairead. But, his mother, Eithne, still remains the most interesting character to me overall. She's been highly enigmatic throughout the show but I've come to the conclusion it's just because they really don't know what to do with the character. Shame. Or better put: why would we want to watch her being the supportive mate to Jack? That's been my question too since the show is called "Single-handed" but this last series had a different tone than the others in regard to his romantic relationships. For some reason, the production team seems to want him to be mated up now. And, he basically horse-traded his inheritance - his mother's land - for the lady. Sounds serious to me. You are right, though. They definitely left their options open with that vague ending. |

What we Lahbib fans will do for our favorite Scottish actress. I watched six middling SINGLE-HANDED shows with the SUV zooming up and down the road, spending time with characters I couldn't get emotionally invested in...sorry, Gemma... just so I could see her. The only thing in the whole six-pack that piqued my interest was the mother's challenge about giving away the land. Lahbib has got to get more face time. I just finished watching the second season of IN TREATMENT on DVD, and, yes!! yes!! yes!!, I'd love to see her sitting on Dr. Paul Weston's couch....just the two of them talking for thirty minutes. |

Ah Ha, I get what you mean. If this was an American tv show I would guess that is all the happy ending we are going to get. The twinge with Mom, though, is interesting. Not only was Jack not living up to his Daddy's standards, but he isn't living up to his Mum's as well. He should leg it to Manchester with Gemma before she sells the flat. Except he sent Brian there instead. The only plot left is Jack and Mom with some possible Gemma thrown in- oh maybe she gets pregnant; that would pull the whole family around. No, I am hoping this the last of Single Handed, though I am tempted to watch the first ones because it is raining outside and I need amusement. Thank you again for making this available. It was lovely. |
