Main Menu Splash Screen

I created the main menu for the prototype scene. I didn't know what to call it so I just named it Steampunk.

Tell me if you like it or not. I used photoshop filters to create the menu images.

If we decide to roll with this, I'll be happy to upload the actual menu on mediafire or something so the other coders can work with it as well.

Oh and I'll try to rework better buttons. I just realized the buttons don't really fit in that well into the menu.

For the real menu (finalized version), I suggest we get an artist to draw us something. This menu is just for the prototype scene, etc. Since I can't draw, I photoshopped the images.

I like it.

The font and typography is a little out there (the green/yellow) but we can work on that later.

I'm sold. There's a lot of yellow, but that's a minor issue. I also liked the music, too bad we can't use it. That's how I imagined the menu theme would be.

I'll make ver.02 with better buttons (probably).

As for the color, I'll test out some other ones like gray/silver (metal color). Unless someone has another suggestion for the color balance?

Personally I like the brass coloration, but that's just me.

Maybe a combination of gold and silver and black, I suppose?

This is amazing.

EDIT: But how did you make it? Edge filter? It kind of reminds me of Umineko's filter but I have no idea what that one is.

There was a lot of photoshopping involved of course. It's a bit complex but here's a little overview: http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/doc/reference/Main_and_Game_Menus

What you need to do is edit the main menu file in the game folder (I forget what the actual name is but it has menu in it so it should be easy to spot.). There are several addons you can use to make use of editing it as well. I don't exactly remember the names since I had them installed on my ren'py for a while now.

What I would suggest to you is to look up some tutorials via google on how to edit the main menu. That should help you out tremendously.

Once I find appropriate websites to learn how to edit the main menu, I'll be sure to link them here for you.

I was wondering how you photoshopped it too though. I've been wondering how it's been done since I've seen that kind of filter before but never knew how to do it.

Oh, I'm also thinking of adding animation for the buttons. Like I'll have a gear next to the button which starts to turn slowing while hovering over the buttons. What do you guys think of the idea? I just thought of it and I think it sounds pretty neat. It should be easy to implement too.

That would be neat. It'd add some flavor to the menu.

Ah, photoshopping? That's an entirely different thing (to coding I mean). I've been using photoshop for years now so I'm used to it. What you need to do to make the menu screen like that is to use the photoshop filters on raw images. I combined some images using the filters and using the pen tool to cut them out so that there is no excess material on it. Then placing them appropriately in the image and editing it so that it looks nice visually. Once you know your way around photoshop, it really is just guessing and checking to see what works best.

For the font, I did gradient stroke, placing several different hues of yellow and green to give it that shiny effect. Then I duplicated the layer of the font and rasterized it so that I can place another stroke with a solid color. That color would then match the rectangle's style (the one with "an original story" on it).

I can record what I did if you want for next time. I'm a pretty bad teacher so I think if I do it, it should be a bit more apparent.

Randerith, are we sticking with the 800x600 default resolution?
Offline Profile Quote Post Goto Top

Yes, that's the primary resolution. Since its midterms this week, I haven't been able to do much. I intend to create another menu (ver.02) as soon as I can. Once I have free time again.

Don't want to put any pressure on, but how difficult would it be to make the background of the menu animated? Just for example, say, turning gears. And for every button the mousehand drifts across, the gears begin turning at different speeds and directions.

This shouldn't be a problem but Ren'py doesn't allow animation at all. It doesn't support GIF files. I've been trying to figure out how to circumvent this restriction. I think if I make it frame by frame it might work...I'll need to do some more tests on it though. As for the delay for the second menu, sorry about that. The reason for the delay is exactly what you stated. I was thinking of having Big Ben in the background and have the clock tick. And the menu button with the gears shifting. The animation for it is done, the damn coding isn't. I'll figure something out soon. If not, we might have to roll with a non-animated menu. That would make me pretty sad if it comes to that.

There's no problem in how much time you need to take. Whatever you're comfortable with coding wise, mate. Even if the exact thing you have in mind doesn't meet the prototype deadline, there's always the finished product.
