The darkest event in Okarthel's history, the siege has devastated many in the long years it has reigned. No dragon can name a more horrifying time in the land's ancient past than the siege of the Dark Clan; the Siege of Shadow.

The siege originated right in the midst of the present Dark Clan, and began as a simple thought; not passing, but lingering, and building greater and greater. It came to the mind of Karthanis, the last leader of the Dark Clan dragons, when the Dark Clan was still known as Crater Clan. To Karthanis, there was no clan greater than his own. Mighty fire-breathers whom still practiced the art of fighting, there was not another in all of Okarthel that could stand up to their power. So then why should they, the great Crater Clan, share the land with others less worthy? If the others weren't willing to preserve the ability to protect their home, why should they be allowed to live in it?

It infuriated Karthanis that the other clans had become so apathetic in their teachings- the art of battle was preserved to just one clan alone, and that was his. Like a disease, his irritation with the other clans spread to the rest of the Crater dragons, until not one of them didn't have a deep-rooted distaste for the other dragons of Okarthel. When Karthanis' anger gradually built until he was convinced that his clan alone deserved the right to the land, an army was ready to fulfill his wishes. But it was not yet time.

Karthanis held onto his anger right into his old age. His dream for conquest may have never been realised- had he not passed his beliefs on to his only son. Since Pytheinas was young, his father filled his mind with hatred for the other clans, and plans with which to erradicate them. Before long, the prince of the Crater Clan had become just like his father. Yet, even then, it wasn't until after a fight with his closest friend that his anger turned to rage. Following his father's death, Pytheinas finally put the plan into motion, and the siege began.

The Crater Clan descended from their great wall upon the peaceful plain that lay beyond it. The dragons of the field were known as the Sun Clan, and each golden dragon raised its head in wonder at the approaching flight of dragons. When the first drop of blood was shed, an uproar of panick shot through the air, but by then it was too late. In minutes, nearly every golden pelt lay dead in the sunny field, shining brightly in the evening sun like bloody trophies to the murderous clan's reign. The siege had begun, and the first clan had fallen.

Next to fall were the furred dragons of the Ruhahe mountain range. Just like the Sun Clan, the unsuspecting clan was caught entirely by surprise by the flight of dragons headed in their direction. But when the first of their clan fell, they quickly gained their senses and tried to fend off their intruders. Unfortunately, just as Karthanis had detested them for, they were not prepared for battle. Like novice knights in a tournament, the Ruhahe's Low Mountain Clan quickly fell, and the corpses of many dragons littered the mountains' slopes.

Closer to the Crater Clan's territory was Marsh Clan, a small clan with few among its numbers. Like sitting ducks, the marsh dragons became easy prey to the dragons of the crater. At the same time, half the Crater Clan had gone after the Glacier Clan to the north. While those that pursued the Marsh Clan were met with great success, the fight with the Glacier Clan was not so easy. Unlike their previous attacks, their own were falling dead amongst the bodies of their opposition. Alarmed, the dragons of the crater slowed in their attack, giving the Glacier dragons the opportunity the escape. It was their first failure, and that angered Pytheinas. But no matter how much they searched the Icy Plains, the Glacier Clan was never found.

The Glacier Clan was just the first to fight back. The Crater Clan again met resistance when they descended upon the helpless dragons of the River Clan. Flightless swimmers and burrowers, the river dragons were defenseless against their attackers. But one dragon stood among them that was not of their clan; capable of flight and fire. It was Pytheinas' old friend, having taken to the River Clan and been adopted among them. Upon seeing his former ally, the Crater's young lord became enraged, and disposed of the one himself.

By then, word had spread to the remaining clans of the Crater Clan's attack. Out of fear, a new name was given to the dragons of the crater- Dark Clan. The "dark ones" would continue to strike fear in the hearts of the dragons of Okarthel, and would go on to bring down the Volcano Clan and Tulip Forest Clan, as well as any small nomadic groups and solo dragons that had the misfortune of getting in their path. For a time, it seemed as though the dragons of Okarthel were doomed to all fall to the Dark Clan's force, but a new Clan arose from the chaos to resist them. A new fighting force, the Rebel Clan, was founded and made up of the survivors from the Dark Clan's attacks. The skill and ability to fight no longer rested in Dark Clan alone- it was up to the new Rebellion to defend their home from the deadly siege.
