A soft breeze rustled through the grass, stirring Naddan's hair as it passed by. He sighed, staring up at the clouds. While his younger Pokemon were off doing who knows what, the more battle-competent Pokemon he owned remained more or less by his side. Amethyst, of course, was merely inches away, drifting her ribbon-like arms through the grass. Noticing he was thinking about her, she caught his eye and smiled. It was kind of scary having a mind reader for a constant companion. It worked both ways, though; he could tell what she was thinking just as easily. "Remember when we met?" he asked, speaking in words because it just seemed right at the moment. <I do,> Amethyst responded. <I seem to remember that you couldn't tell whether I was a boy or a girl.> "...oh shush, you," he said, grinning up at the sky. "You were my first Pokemon. Fen had Ruby her whole life, practically, but it took me this long to find you." <Interesting way of putting it,> Amethyst smiled. She looked over at Djinn, who was holding Grandi by the dorsal fin and flying in slow circles around Naddan's makeshift campsite. "We caught Djinn... pretty soon after we met, huh," said Naddan. <Fiesty little Trapinch,> Amethyst giggled. "And that's when you got your diamond." Naddan looked down at the Mismagius's neck, where the center gem was a clear blue, instead of the crimson of the rest of them. <A successful trip to the Iron Mines, I'd say.> "And then Grandi, I fished him up a couple days later." <Wasn't so chivalrous while he and Djinn were trying to tear each other's faces off, was he?> Amethyst smiled. "...they've come a long way," Naddan agreed. Djinn had almost single-handedly secured the fish Pokemon's continued usefulness. Moving over land became very tiring very quickly for somebody with no legs, but Djinn's wings had made transportation possible. It wasn't always his wings, though. "Then, after that, we went to the Late-Summer Classic." If there was anything that stirred nostalgia in Naddan, it was the mention of that event. He had attended with Amethyst the Misdreavus, and watched as Djinn the Trapinch carried Grandi the Carvanha around in his mouth. They'd met... so many people there. Including meeting up with Naddan's sister, Fen. Aside from her, he wondered how many of those people he'd ever meet again... <We met DJ there too, don't forget,> Amethyst reminded him. "Oh yeah..." They'd met the little Bulbasaur there at the dance, but he'd belonged to somebody else at the time... it wasn't until almost a year later that certain events caused him to join Naddan's team. Yeah, "certain events." <Then when we got home after that party, we found Shuriken waiting for us.> Naddan grinned, remembering the surprise of finding a Treecko hanging around his apartment. Just one more event that happened in the course of that crazy night, but the one that most changed his life by far. He looked around for the Sceptile and found him sitting on a low tree branch, legs and tail dangling in midair. Relaxing. As he had every right to be. "Viral was next." <Yeah, that was just odd.> They recalled the encounter in the clock shop, where Naddan had gone to get his highly specialized watch fixed, and had encountered the shiny Porygon. Grandi had battled him, circumstances allowing for the Carvanha to be very competent without the presence of water... "He's still pretty enigmatic." Amethyst nodded her agreement, watching the PorygonZ float around the campsite's boundaries. Who knew what was going on in that head of his, anyway? <Lots of 0's and 1's,> Amethyst giggled. "And then Swift... my most ironic choice of name ever," said Naddan. The Yanmega in question was sitting on a rock beneath Shuriken's branch. Was he too lazy to even fly up into the tree? <You have to admit though, he's really fast when he wants to be.> "Which is never." Naddan yawned, stretching his arms above his head. "Where'd we catch him, the lake?" <Yup,> Amethyst nodded. Naddan considered his main team members' histories. Each was rich with all the details of its own story. He pitied the people who thought of their Pokemon as just companions to battle with, he really did. <Then we have Zenith and Boss... oh excuse me, I mean Nadir,> Amethyst continued. Naddan smirked. "Don't think many people's Pokemon go around renaming themselves, do they?" He sighed, smiling wistfully up at the sky. It wasn't that he minded, it was just rather odd. The fire moth and queen bee Pokemon in question were perched higher up in Shuriken's tree, the branches laden with dozens of Combee. Considering he only had Pokeballs for two of them, Naddan wasn't sure he could exactly call them his own. He was ok with that, though. Maybe it was better to be less possessive of your Pokemon. It would help some people think of them as friends. Consider their own stories. <I'm sure each Combee has a very different and meaningful story,> Amethyst teased. It was true, though, she knew. "We got those three Combee that started it all that one time in the Great Hive..." Naddan mused. <Then Zenith's egg on the return trip.> Naddan had been somewhat surprised to go from seeing the egg to the breathtaking, fiery-winged insect before him, but he took that in stride as well. Boss - er, Nadir - had been extremely protective of the egg, and if she wanted to hatch and evolve its contents as quickly as possible, he wasn't going to complain. "We should go back and get some food at some point," Naddan sighed. "I'm getting kind of sick of eating honey." <It's good honey, though.> "Yeah, it is." They stared up at the sky a while longer. "Do you think I've been too lazy about training my other Pokemon?" Naddan asked. Besides the eight Pokemon around him, the only one of his other ten who was remotely battle-competent was Sparx, the Electabuzz. He should think about getting an Electirizer, Naddan realized. That would help a lot. <Nah,> said Amethyst, waving aside the question with one long arm. <It's fun being small. They'll evolve when they're ready.> "...what about Miranda?" <...heehee, yeah, I don't think she'll ever be ready to evolve.> Naddan considered whether or not this would upset him. He pictured the small, cute, cuddly form of the shiny Smoochum. He pictured a Jynx. "...I am perfectly fine with that!" He shuddered. Amethyst laughed. "Anyway... Miranda was a gift to me when I became a co-leader, huh. Of Aeonic Mirage. From Conner." They remained silent a few moments. Things could change so fast, couldn't they. <And Sparx?> Amethyst prompted, wanting her trainer to think about something else. He knew this, and appreciated it. "He was a shadow Elekid, wasn't he," said Naddan. He'd known this, of course, but it had been so long, it seemed so strange now. "A little ball of hate." <Miranda fixed him, didn't she.> "Yeah. I think. Not quite sure how that worked out." It was very clear, though, that Sparx was not a shadow Pokemon any longer. Nobody with a closed heart would have taken to the Smoochum as he had. <She also brought back Spora, from that trip...> Amethyst chuckled. "...oh yeah." The friendly Shroomish had apparently gone along with Miranda as well... Remembering that some of Alex's Pokemon had been involved, too, Naddan wondered how much she knew about what had occurred. Because he certainly wasn't sure. "Yiggy and Facet were best of friends, and then Yiggy started liking a girl," Naddan laughed. Amethyst joined him. <They don't realize how obvious it is,> she giggled. "Can't wait to see how those two turn out..." Naddan sighed happily. Yiggy and Spora... "...Yiggy used to be mounted on my wall, didn't he." This realization brought on another chuckle from both of them. That rootlike fossil had sat as a decoration in Naddan's house, ever since he'd found it at the ocean... up until he'd met a strange pair of twins who claimed to have a fossil-reviving machine. Turned out, they'd been telling the truth. <Facet, on the other hand, you caught the normal way.> "Yeah, in the Gorge... when I met that guy. It's strange, I don't remember his name, I just remember the name of the person he was looking for. Alan." <Yeah, strange,> Amethyst agreed. She paused. <And Fal was another of Miranda's recruits, wasn't he.> "Yup, and the group was out with Alex's Pokemon again, too. Heh, they should have adventures more often. It seems to get me more team members every time." <Oneira was recruited by Miranda, too, except she was with Rhapsody's Pokemon instead of Alex's.> "Oh, that's right." Naddan nodded. "And we got Trance while with Alex's Pokemon, except I was there. Can't credit Miranda that time." He smiled. <And last but not least... Poliwag.> "...oh yes, Poliwag. I should, er, give him a name sometime, huh." <You should,> said Amethyst. "Ok, fine, how does 'Glenn' sound?" <Sounds fine!> "Good. We'll tell him when they get back." <Kay.> They both stared up at the sky. "Hey, Amethyst?" <Yes?> "Thanks for being my friend." <Any time.> Edited by Dan, Nov 7 2010, 10:29 PM.
