Expanding the Forum; How to bring more people to the site

GENTLEMEN,

I come with some propositions to bring more people to the forum and achieve more. As a small community, I feel we'd benefit from attracting more users and having more things to do on the site.

First of all, we should consider other forms of animation. Pivot is awesome, but its userbase is dwindling, and it is not a whole lot different to animation programs such as stykz and EZToon. For this purpose, I think we should advertise to these groups as well. This might re-purpose P_F to a 'silent film' website, but is that bad? (Please provide your opinions guys)

Secondly, I suggest doing away with the ranked forums like beginner, inters and pro, and use a portal, much like the one on Newgrounds. Why? Because people want that! On Darkdemon, it has been wanted ever since it was removed. The concept of an animation portal for silent film, not just pivot, would be great.

It would also bring several types of silent animation together, so the users would be able to have a second portal for music, or even just a radio! This gives people even more stuff to do, and it doesn't take long either. After all, if you submit an animation to a portal and you get the 'best animation of the week', you'd feel a lot better than if you worked really hard on an intermediate level animation and got told to work on easing, right?

Also, I think we should still have an 'animation showoff' forum where we can post submissions for critique, and get ranked in a similar way to how we are now; just in only one subforum.

I also think we should seriously reconsider the structure of the forum, such that forum games and spam are combined, and 'Random Talk' and 'Spam' are more clearly defined.

'Tutoring' is currently also boring. What incentive to tutors have to tutor? For this purpose, I think tutors should get insane amounts of P_F points when the system is finished, to encourage people to help each other.

Back to rankings; if we DO keep animation rankings in the allocated 'critique' forum, I suggest we make each rank explicitly defined. Right now, intermediates require good easing, decent poses and semi-realistic movements, while pros also have to consider physics and/or complex effects. That's great, but that's a bit broad. We should be talking about how figures need to react, WHY the ranks are split up the way they are, and how people can improve once they reach 'pro' status.

Last of all, we need to make animation accessible. We need to have a big sign on the forum for users who haven't logged in saying 'Hey! Welcome to P_F! Download pivot here, make an animation, save it as a .gif, and then upload it to cubeupload or your preferred hosting site and share your creations with the community!' We need to make the process of coming into animation as easy as possible. (Note: if we do mention a host, we should ask them if they're ok with us using their site as our endorsed host. Some hosts may disagree with that)

This might sound a lot like what Darren posted on Darkdemon, and that's because I was inspired by it. Darkdemon wants to change, so why shouldn't we? We're just going to change different aspects, because after all, we're a different forum, just with the same purpose.

Lol who's gonna pay for the change in board?
Going to put it blunty I ain't I have my own reasons.

I'd like to see a forum where it's not just about pivot, Yeh it's nice and small but if we expand on different types not just animation then we can attract different types of members.
Giving people ranks on music production, Art work and other things will make the forum more exicting and people will be encouraged to do more work.
I'd love to have some sort of rank in the art department and I'm sure others would.

but before any of this can happen we need SOMEONE to sort out these points.
Taking way too long.

I just checked how much money it would cost me all in all, it would be around 300 € the first year and about 40€ every year after.
Paying the set up is no problem for me and I guess we could easily pay the 40€ with advertisements.
Money is no problem here, but I will gladly accept donations when I start doing this.

However, this is not going to happen soon , it's going to take a lot of planning.

Wait, Mainframe do you run the "bills" for the forum, or are you just opting-in to pay for stuff? Either way, that's pretty amazing.

So, how/when is the planning going to take place? Maybe the mods and admins should start a serious thread regarding this thing--that is if this existing one isn't fine already.

Not to offend, but if we include art on the portal we by default lose our niche status, and if we make it just about art, we compete and auto-lose with deviantART, several art forums, flickr and others. We can't do that as a major segment. A small forum for art could work but I doubt we could make it a major part of the community, at least at the start.

I'm the one paying for everything , because I like the idea of a bigger Pivot_Forum.
It really is no problem, once I move to Amsterdam , start studying and have a place to work 40€ a Year is a ridiculously low amount of money.

Yeh the forum should mainly focus on pivot but I meant a small little section for all these other things.
Why hasn't an admin responded here.

Focus on animation I think, instead of just pivot. We'll use pivot as our basis for what we understand in animation but if we make it a broad spread from different programs, we can bolster creativity and competitiveness by comparing animation programs, styles and principles.

Also, there are LOADS of different animation programs out now like Pencil, TISFAT, DOINK, EZToon, Stykz and so on which all offer different benefits and limitations. We should try to expand as much as we can.

Wait, so Endless, basically what your are trying to say is that we make a pure
silent film/animation site. And instead of a forum, just a portal and a star system?
In that case, Im on board with this :D

I was thinking about a front page like Newgrounds with a forum behind it.

It'll still be a forum, but with a much better layout.

Best example for this would be the technicpack website, it's great , or even Droidz.

But then it would be metal, Mainframe.
And metal is not cozy. Or small.

No, just the cover would be metal, the stuff behind the metal stays the same.

Mmmh, I don't know... Hm.

Well okay, a front page might be cool--perhaps with five animations of the week, those that were rated the highest over the past week or so? Ooo, that'd be interesting. I would like to see that implemented if possible. :)

Perhaps we could clean up the themes? Has anybody noticed the via domus grey buttons are a little... pixelated? Perhaps if they were made with a higher resolution and kept slightly larger, we could stop this?

Also, maybe shadows to make the forum borders and such seem more fleshed-out? Oooo...

Theming is great, but core site mechanics must be implemented first. Also, I would like to suggest a highly minimalist theme, to minimise downloads. After all, this site will be all about sharing media, which will take its time to load anyway, and will have bandwidth attached to it. A simple, html/java based site would be optimum for the purpose, and would keep the focus on the content.

If you want to stick with the metallic effect, stick to monochromatic colours. You'll get the same result, though everything will be cleaner.

@Ace: There will still be a forum, but the focus will shift to the portal.
