Journey's first true steps

"Whoo!" Alex said, pumping his fist slightly in front of him. It may have been a rather easy victory, but it was his first victory nonetheless, so he was unsurprisingly happy for the win. Having it's own bout of celebration, the Chimchar helped itself to a couple excited backflips, arms swinging above it's head in glee upon landing.

Taking the couple steps between himself and his pokemon, Alex stepped over to where the chimp and bird were and knelt to give his pokemon a light pat on the head. "You look like you could have gone at least a few more rounds, Leikki. Great job." The pokemon gave it's trainer a smile. Returning the expression, Alex then turned his attention down to the defeated Pidgey. "You didn't do too bad yourself, little guy," he said. "If only you were just a bit stronger..." He would have liked to have a capable potential flyer on his team, but this particular bird was simply too weak at the moment.

Leaving the tiny bird to recover from it's injuries, Alex pushed himself to his feet, stretching his arms up over his head. "That was a nice warm-up," he told his simian partner. "Let's see if there's anything else out here worth taking on, while you're still relatively fresh." The Chimchar appeared rather happy to hear that. Still fired up from it's victory, it thought it was ready to take on the world at this point.

Just as Alex and Leikki were about to move on, a rustling started in the grass. From the grass emerged the purple face of a wild Ekans, its gold eyes gleaming greedily. Stealthily, it slithered over to where the injured bird lay. Intent on stealing an easy meal, the snake hissed threateningly at the trainer and his Chimchar. The rattle at the tip of his tail shook furiously as he warned the pair that this Pidgey now belonged to it.

The pair hadn't even realized that they had company at first. In fact, they were already three or four steps away from their starting position. Apparently, this wasn't enough for the snake. The sound of the rattle spreading through the area caused both human and primate to stop in their tracks, each looking over their shoulder at what was making the noise.

The Ekans' intent was clear, at least to Alex. It wanted to take advantage of the Pidgey's injuries, and gulp up it's lunch without resistance. Despite that being pretty much the 'natural order' of things, Alex didn't let the thought sit well with him. He knew that the tiny bird was weak to begin with, and at this time was even weaker from the recent battle. Though he wasn't entirely certain why he cared so much, Alex decided to help the Pidgey survive just a little longer, at least.

As if reading it's trainer's mind, the Chimchar turned to face the Ekans and took a bold step forward, it's eyes locked on the shaking rattle. It was a sound that it had never experienced before, so already it was feeling slightly unnerved by it. Alex could see the slight hesitance in the chimp. "This looks like the kind of challenge you were looking for, Leikki. Stand your ground."

The Chimchar gave only a slight nod to acknowledge that it had heard him, his eyes turning from the rattle to the snake's face, staring into it's eyes. "I don't think a leer will work with this one," Alex observed, reaching back into his bag for the Pokedex to log the new entry. "And I have a feeling a normal scratch isn't going to affect it much..."

Alex had to admit, he was slightly reserved as to what he should do. Just then, as he was returning the 'Dex back to his bag, he remembered a bit of conversation that he had with the lab assistant as they had walked from the holding area to the storage room. He recalled the man telling him that the Chimchar knew more moves that one would expect for a pokemon with so little experience, because it had picked up attacks that it's parent had known before hand. Alex practically stared at the snake, trying to remember which two had been mentioned.

With a snap of his fingers, it came to him, and a smile crossed Alex's lips. "Keep you eye on that snake, Leikki," he told his pokemon. "Wait for it to make the first move, then fake it out. Try to catch it off guard." At that, the primate nodded again, it's attention now fully held by the opposition.

The Ekans was quite angry that its warning rattle would go unheeded. If anything, it viewed the pair's insistence on staying an unwanted disturbance. With an angry hiss, the Ekans moved in to strike but was thwarted in its initial strike - the little primate one step ahead of it with its Fake Out. The agile little monkey managed to move out of the way before jumping in to, pretty much, slap the snake around. Taken aback by the attack, Ekans blinked and shook its head from side to side as it slithered off to the side to regain its bearings.

The Chimchar appeared to have fun in disorienting the snake as it used it's Fake Out with no small amount of success. Alex watched the Ekans as it moved off to recover from the slapping it had recieved, and wasted no time in taking dvantage of the situation. "Leikki, now," he called, pointing at the snake. "Don't let it recover. Get in there and give it a good scratching before it can get it's sights back on you. Give it all you've got!"

It almost seemed as if the primate was anticipating the command, as it was moving toward the Ekans even before Alex finished speaking, nails once more at the ready and an aggressive gleam in it's eye.

Almost as soon as the snake had regained its focus, the little primate was at it again. The Ekans didn't have the time to get away or prepare an attack, so it took the next attack head-on. Nails digging into its scales caused the Ekans to hiss in anger as it twisted its body this way and that to try decrease the damage being done.

After it had managed to put some space between it and the little monkey, the Ekans hissed and stretched its body out - the rattle on the tip of its tail shaking wildly to catch the Chimchar's attention. As that was going on, the Ekans moved the other half of its body around to the other side, before constricting itself around the monkey.

The Chimchar was so focused on it's adversary that when it heard the rattling of the Ekan's tail, it's gaze shot to it, in case there was any danger of attack from it. Unfortunately, because of that it's attention was drawn away from the rest of the snake's body, and before it knew it, it was being squeezed rather tightly. "Chiiiimmm!" the primate squealed as it tried to squirm it's way out of the snake's grasp, to no avail. Trying for a different tactic, it tried to swipe at the Ekan's with it's still-free tail, hoping to heat up it's opponent enough with the flame at the tip to get it to loosen it's grip. Whether or not that would work, it had no idea.

"Keep pushing, Leikki," Alex called to his pokemon, biting at his lip as the Ekans held the wrap strong. "Try to get out. Keep squirming." Alex wasn't really certain of what could be done in the current situation. "As soon as you're able to get free, push it away with a Blaze Kick."

The squirming was something the Ekans was used to. That's what every other Pokemon it caught within its coils did to try and escape. All the snake need do is tighten its hold around its victim. However, that was significantly harder to do this time around - mainly because of the Chimchar's flame-for-a-tail. That wasn't something that the Ekans had to put up with normally, and it was definitely something new. As it felt the heat radiating off of the flame scorching its scales, the Ekans immediately let the little monkey go and attempted to slither off to regroup - but the little primate had other plans.

Instead of using its Blaze Kick to put some space between the two of them, the Chimchar used its attack to (more or less) spite the snake as it moved away. It jumped up, after the snake, and one of its feet became enveloped in a flame. As the kick made contact with the snake, the Ekans gave an awful hiss. It swung its head around and opened its mouth, shooting out what looked like several small needles, in the Chimchar's direction. In response, the Chimchar agilely jumped backwards and out of way of the needles - though it had taken a few hits.

Alex released a slight sigh of relief when he watched as his own pokemon managed to work it's way out of the snake's wrap via a somewhat unconventional method. The Blaze Kick afterward seemed to do almost as intended as well, though not quite for the same reason as the trainer had hoped. But the primate was free, so he couldn't complain too much. By the time the two pokemon had settled down, the Ekans firing off it's Poison Sting technique, Alex noticed not only that the two critters were not only positioned so that the snake was facing away from the human, but also that the Ekans, while still able to put up a decent fight, was beginning to look like it was worn down.

Overall, Alex was likig what he was seeing. Sure, he was impressed by the skill of his own pokemon, but the tenacity that the Ekans let off was catching his interest as well, and he decided then that having such a member on his team would serve him will in the future. Reaching into his duffel, Alex rooted around until his fingers wrapped around an empty pokeball, removing it and giving the button of it's front a quick press, expanding the ball to full size. Pausing for a couple seconds, Alex tightened his grasp on the sphere, wishing it success as he tossed it at the Ekans while it's attention was still diverted awway from him, hoping to catch it by surprise and capture it before it could realize what was happening.

The Ekans was somewhere between running away and fighting until it simply couldn't fight anymore. It knew that if this fight continued there was a huge chance that it could lose, but it couldn't get over the fact that this monkey and that human interrupted its meal. Simply put, the Ekans seemed to be running on its bad temper at this point.

And the Chimchar looked like it still had the energy to taunt the snake, drawing its attention away from its trainer. Alex hadn't given it another order to attack or anything, but he had been doing something. Might as well by him the time he needed. Leikki was agilely dancing around the snake, making it give another angry hiss and rattle of its tail. It then gave a wave of sorts, as Alex tossed the Pokeball at the snake.

The Pokeball made contact with the snake, and the snake disappeared into the device in a red light. The Pokeball landed on the ground, swaying violently from side to side. It seemed that the Ekans still has some fight left in it. Leikki stood close by, watching it warily. After what seemed like an eternity, the ball ceased to move.
