Camping in the Cave; On the way to Saffron via Diglett's Cave and Vermilion!

After a bit of walking, the travelers were able to descend into Diglett's Cave.

"Felix, do you know Flash?" Percival had a habit of addressing Pokemon directly, rather than speaking only to their trainers; it probably came from his time alone with Joseph. "It's fine if not; it's usually not too dark, and I have a flashlight if it gets that way." He smiled, looking over at Jordan.

"We'll have to go through Vermilion City as well - are you going to challenge Lieutenant Surge as well? I hear he's an... interesting fellow."

As he spoke, he gestured subtly, directing Jordan's attention to a little Diglett peeking up behind a stone. Isn't it cute?

"Kachu...." the Pikachu shook his head apoligetically "(Sorry.... I used to, but then... well, I can't quite remember how.)"

"Oh~!" Jordan said, ever distracted from the topic on hand. "Luma, you wanna try your hand at catching something?"

"(You bet I do!)" The Eevee said, immeadiatley excited. "(This'll be a peice of cake.)"

The Diglett sneered at Luma "(Peice of cake. Right.)"

"And yeah, I was planning on challenging him. Maybe, if I can catch this Diglett, I'll be in better shape. I was actually tempted to try something I saw on the internet; It's called a 'Nuzlocke Challenge.' I can only catch the first Pokemon I see in a cave or whatever. So, yeah! Go for it, Luma~! Start us off with a Sand Attack!"

((I omitted a couple of rules from the Nuzlocke; Obviously, if it dies, it dies. And I always name my Pokemon.))

"That's all right," he said cheerfully to the Pikachu. "I do have the flashlight, after all."

He just wasn't sure he'd remembered to bring spare batteries.

He didn't turn the flashlight on just let, not wanting the light to frighten the Diglett away or hurt Luma's eyes while she tried to battle. Instead he stepped back to be out of range of all but the most extensive attacks, laying a hand on Joseph's back as he watched.

"Good luck, Luma!"

"(Let's do this!)" Luma yelled while slicing the air with her tail, disturbing the dust and creating a veil of sand.

The Diglett, however, laughed. "(You really think that that will work on a ground-type Pokemon? My aim is better than yours in a sandstorm!)"

Luma felt chills prick her spine.

"(MAGNITUDE: 5!)" the call sounded from right next to the Eevee, and she felt the ground hit her from beneath.

Both her trainer and her sister yelled in fright.

"('m fine, 'm fine.)" she muttered unconvincingly as she got to her paws.

"(I told you so.)" The diglett sneered. "(Is it... Astonishing?)"

Luma tried to run at the little... thing... but she found herself frozen in place. She was in a flinch mode.

He had used Astonish on her.

"(No.)" Kelsey groaned. She felt that something bad was about to happen. Really bad.

"(MAGNITUDE: 10!)" Diglett called out, and the room began rumbling.

"(NO!)" Kelsey wailed, bolting forward as the ground began to shake. She shoved Luma up, into the air, where the earthquake's first waves would not hit her. As a result, the bouncing ground launched Kelsey into the air as well, but a lot harder... and where an unlucky spurr of rock jutted from the ceiling.

"Kelsey!" the cry ripped from three throats, two of them Pokemon.

"NO!" Jordan sobbed as Kelsey fell to the ground, blood spilling out of her.

"(No, Kelsey, no!)" Luma fell back to earth, running at her sister. The earthquake had stopped, and the Diglett had fled the scene.

"(No...)" she murmured again, crouching next to her sister.

He sister did not move.

((I am a terrible person.))

((I thought Luma was the Eevee? Astonish should have no effect on her. Ah well.))

Percival froze as the Jolteon fell, Joseph beating his wings with a cry of alarm. After a moment the researcher ran forward to kneel opposite Luma, voice soft.

"Shh, Luma, let me see her."

He reached to examine her, hands gentle.

((IGNORE MY IDIOCY FFFFFF. I'm an idiot bleeeargh. /goes to the corner of shame))

Luma turned with a growl, ready to protect her.

"(Get away from her! You brought us into the place!)"

She grolwed again when someone touched her, but it was merely Felix, putting his paw on her shoulder. She shuffled away from Kelsey and buried her head in Felix's shouldr, sobbing.

"(Why did she have to do that....)"

Jordan's reaction was not nearly so violent, but she was sitting with her hands curled around her knees, and was crying silently.

"I'm sorry, Kelsey..." she whispered "I should have been a better... I'm so sorry....."

Felix would not allow himself to be touched by emotions. He needed to be there to comfort the girls.

He stroked Luma's head gently, hushing her. "(It's... it's going to be okay... It's alright... Kelsey's in a bet-)"

"(Go away.)" Luma muttered, turning away from him. "(Leave me alone.)"

Percival flinched back as the Eevee growled, sitting back on his heels.

"I...Jordan...."

("Let him be,") Joseph chirped at Luma, raising his wings in warning. ("No one made your trainer follow. No one made her go after the Diglett, least of all by throwing sand at a Ground type. No one--")

"Joseph, shh," Percival said gently; he didn't understand the Pigeot, but he knew his old friend's angry tone. The researcher looked at Jordan then, sighing softly.

"Once we're out... we'll head to Saffron like planned, but instead of staying... we'll go to Lavender Town. If you want," he added apologetically. He did not approach; he honestly thought Luma might attack at this point.

"Okay..." Jordan sniffled. She wiped her face with her hand. It was her fault, wasn't it? now she was ready to do whatever was asked of her. Her mind and emotions had retreated, as they always did when something awful happened. "Sure."

Luma had turned to growl again, this time at Joseph. "(Well, she trusted you two! She thought that you would protect her, because that's what adults do! It's not her fault that you didn't follow through!)"

"(Shh, Luma... We should bury her.)" Felix murmured gently to Luma, trying to distract her. The eevee shivered and tried to keep from crying any more, though she knew she would.

"(Yes. But away from this Arceus-awful place.)" The two picked up Kelsey and began to carry her towards the exit. Jordan followed behind, dragging her feet in the dirt.

("Percival is a researcher. I am an assistant. If you are old enough to leave home, you are old enough to make decisions.") The Pigeot moved to Percival's side, preening his feathers. ("The Jolteon made her choice to protect you - don't dishonor her by taking that choice away from her. Percival sees many things, but he does not foresee - don't muddle the situation by confusing them.")

Percival was quiet, walking a bit closer to Jordan. He was troubled; aside from the tragedy itself, it was unusual for a young Diglett to attack so strongly instead of hiding in the earth.

Why had it?

The diglett zoomed away underground, pondering his take on the situation.

Serves them right! Those stupid Rockets... taking my mum.... But.... What if they weren't Rockets?

Diglett was torn between sympathy and satisfaction. Maybe her shouldn't have killed the Jolteon...

Luma glared at Joseph for a moment longer before dropping her eyes. She shouldn't be angry. Not at a time like this, for a reason like this.

Felix climbed up to Jordan's shoulder and rubbed his face against her's like a cat. Unfortunatley, this gave her a static shock, which didn't help the situation.

"Felix, get off." she muttered. Felix obliged, glancing worriedly at his trainer. If they were going to move on, she couldn't stay this way.
