Title: A Senate Diary by Senator Brian A. Murphy
Target: Everyone
Place: Nationwide
Topic: Behind The Scenes With A US Senator

Prologue: November 5, 1996
Quote:

In the 10 page prologue, Murphy talks about the day he was first elected to the Senate. When everyone thought that Louisiana would elect its first Republican senator since Reconstruction, Murphy defied the odds and narrowly defeated his GOP opponent Woody Jenkins. He briefly covers the anxiety of waiting for the polls to close on Election Day, and the thrill of being declared the winner. He closes by briefly mentioning Christmas 1996, and how he received a leather-bound journal from his wife. It was her suggestion that Murphy keep a diary of his experiences in the Senate.

Chapter 1: Freshmen Are Supposed To Be Seen, And Not Heard
Quote:

In chapter one, Murphy mentions his swearing in, and the second inauguration of President Clinton. He talks about how freshman senators traditionally stay very quiet, and how one of his predecessors (Huey Long) broke with tradition when his larger-than-life personality joined the Senate. Murphy stresses his desire to find some kind of happy medium between being quiet as a mouse and larger than life.

Chapter 2: Impeachment
Quote:

Chapter two covers the impeachment of President Clinton. Murphy talks about how he first heard the news of the Lewinsky Scandal, and how disappointed he was in the president. He takes us behind the scenes, and mentions discussions between he and some of his colleagues about the scandal. He speaks of how he explained the ordeal to his two youngest children. He ends by discussing the impeachment trial in the Senate, and why he voted to acquit the president.

Chapter 3: 9/11
Quote:

In chapter three, Murphy skips ahead to September 11, 2001. He talks about being on Capitol Hill that day, and having to evacuate. He talks of gathering of the steps of the Capitol that evening to sing God Bless America with his colleagues, and the spirit of bipartisanship in the weeks and months that follow. He also briefly touches on the anthrax scare during the fall and winter of that year.

Chapter 4: Reelection
Quote:

Chapter four discusses Murphy's 2002 reelection campaign. He talks about how tough is was to make it back to the Senate in a state that was becoming more and more conservative, especially in an election year that was very unfriendly to Democrats.

Chapter 5: Iraq
Quote:

In chapter 5, Murphy discusses the debate, on and off the Senate Floor, on whether or not to go to war with Iraq. he talks about his eventual decision to support the use of force.

Chapter 6: Mission Accomplished?
Quote:

In chapter 6, Murphy discusses the violence in Iraq after major combat operations ended. He touches on the deaths of Saddam Hussein's sons, and Hussein's capture. He talks about how he began to question his decision to support the use of force, and questions whether or not the Bush Administration knew that there there were no WMD's in Iraq.

Chapter 7: A Tale Of Two Storms
Quote:

Chapter 7 discusses Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He talks about the lead up to the storms, and touring the areas hardest hit by flooding and wind damage. He goes on to discuss meetings with the president, and Governor Blanco and talks about how both sides were extremely unprepared for the storm and the relief efforts. He concludes by talking about the efforts of him and his colleagues (on both sides of the aisle) to secure the funds to rebuild.

Chapter 8: Majority
Quote:

Chapter 8 discusses the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006. He talks about how the administration and the GOP failed the American people, and how common sense Democratic solutions would get the country back on the right track. He goes on to talk about how it felt for his party to finally have a real, working majority in the Senate.

Chapter 9: Hope, Change, And The Struggle To Make Them A Reality
Quote:

Chapter 9 discusses Murphy's 2008 reelection campaign, and the first year of the Obama Administration. He talks about the debate over the distasteful, but necessary, measures taken to stimulate the economy in the early days of 2009, and the push to send Obamacare to the president's desk. He closes by discussing how he may not agree with every aspect of the agendas advocated by the president and Congress, but concludes that imperfect reform is better than seeing Americans suffer under the status quo.

Chapter 10: A National Tragedy, And The Future
Quote:

The final chapter discusses the death and funeral of President Obama. Senator Murphy concludes by talking about the challenges facing the country as it moves toward the 2012 elections, and how hard-working, honest leadership is needed in these times.

Fundraiser #:3
Type: E-Mail
Target: 250,000 Centrist Democrats, Moderate Independents, Moderate Republicans, and Small Business Owners across America
Place: Online
Topic: Economy

Quote:

Dear Friend,

As you may have heard, I recently announced my intention to seek the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. I’m running because I want to continue the progress that was made under President Barack Obama. I want to get our economy humming again. Unlike many politicians, I’ve worked in the private sector as a small business owner. I started my own real estate development firm in 1979. Today, that company is one of the top development firms in South Louisiana. I know how difficult it is to keep a small business in business. I know what kind of assistance small business owners need from the government. I’ve created jobs. I know that small businesses are the backbone of our economy. As president, I will work to strengthen America’s small businesses, and assist small business owners. I will expand the Small Business Administration, and provide more loans and incentives to current and prospective small business owners. If we can get America’s small business moving in the right direction, we will quicken our economic recovery.

However, I have a long way to go before I can get to the White House and continue the progress started by Barack Obama. Before I can get there, I’m going to need your help. I would greatly appreciate a donation of $25, $50, $75, $100, or more. Please consider being one of the earliest supporters of my campaign. Together, we can move America forward!

Thanks,

#3 - $255,000. Moderate Republicans are waiting to see if there will be a champion for them in the GOP contest this year before they will fully commit to you. But moderate Democrats like you.

Food evening, folks! It’s great to be here with all of you. I’ve been so busy in the Senate and with my presidential campaign that I haven’t had much time to come out here to the Crescent City. Thank you all for being here, tonight. I hope you all enjoy the food and drinks that have been prepared for all of us.

You all know that I’m a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president. As usual when it comes to presidential primaries, I’m going to have some pretty stiff competition from Senate Majority Leader Steve Fisher, and President Pro Temp Neil Clinton. I’m sure it’ll be a hard-fought primary. However, Neil, Stephen, and I are good friends. I have no doubt that no matter who wins, the Democratic Party will be in good hands, and will be victorious on Election Day 2012.

As of now, it looks like the GOP has united behind one candidate: Ron Tilsley. Ron represents our neighbor to the West in the Senate. He’s a friend of mine too. Personally, I think he’s a good man. He represents his state well. However, just in this Congressional session alone, he has proven that he is not a candidate that can be a proper leader for every American.

In the past several weeks, Ron Tilsley has come out in favor of a radical right-wing agenda sponsored by one of the most radical right-wing social conservatives in the US Senate: Annadale Taylor. Senator Tilsley has cosponsored a proposed Constitutional Amendment that completely tramples on states’ rights by seeking to outlaw gay marriage and domestic partnerships. Now, I’ll be one hundred percent honest with all of you, right now. I’m not the most progressive Democrat in America when it comes to the issue of marriage. However, I think it’s an issue that should be decided at the ballot box rather than a bunch of US Senators in the corridors of power in Washington.

It gets worse. Now, as a Catholic and a father of four children, I’m no fan of abortion. I think, at best, the practice is a necessary evil. As president, I will do what I can to ensure that abortion is safe, legal, and rare. Ron Tilsley doesn’t like the practice of abortion either. That’s why he’s cosponsored the most Draconian violation of a woman’s right to choose that I’ve seen in all my years in politics. The bill he’s cosponsored would tax the incomes of abortion doctors by 35%, would allow radical anti-abortion groups into our public schools, and redefine what could be considered a “late-term” abortion.

Folks, we cannot allow Ron Tilsley and his radical right-wing social agenda anywhere near the White House. I don’t intend to let it happen. That’s why I’m running for president. I can’t fight the radical right without your help. I know you’ve already paid to get a plate of this fine food, but if you can manage to open your wallets once more please consider making another donation to my campaign. Please help me stop the radical right from pushing its Draconian social agenda on America.

Edited to add in the price per plate.

#4 - $232,500. Excellent event! A lot of details. You explained what those attending were getting for their money. You were descriptive with the menu and showed your location and talked about an issue that showed how you differ with your potential GOP rival in the future. You also chose to be positive about your primary opponents and that didn't turn off those who came to hear you speak. I liked this one.

Dear Friend,

I am absolutely thrilled by the progress being made by my campaign. I’m lucky enough to have earned endorsements from several prominent Senate Democrats, including Iowa’s junior senator Cameron James Hart. What’s more, I happy to see more Americans from all walks of life deciding to lend their support to my campaign to move America forward. It truly humbles me to know that there are so many people who are willing to put their trust in my hands.

As we close in on fall and the primary campaign gets underway, I will continue to push my agenda of economic renewal, a strong national defense, and affordable healthcare for all Americans.

I can’t do it, though, without your help. Please consider making a donation, no matter how small, to my campaign. Every penny counts. Make your voice known in this election. Together, we can make a difference! Thank you for your help, and may God bless you.

Sincerely,
