Helo looked at Zadora out of the corner of his eyes. "Yes. I greatly desire to see my homeland rid of the undead menace. My childhood home was in the path that is the Dead Scar now, and my entire family fell beneath the onslaught of the Scourge. I would very much like to see the land they died defending returned to its former beauty," he said gruffly.

Noamuth chose that moment to saunter back in, licking his chops. He walked up to where they all sat and flopped down on his haunches, then dropping his head to the bench Helo sat on with a 'whump'. The hunter absently patted the head, frowning.

"The Regent Lord is either willfully stupid or blind - ask any Farstrider and they'll tell you how tenuous our defenses are in certain areas...rather than turn down offered help from the Crusade, we should be embracing their help with open arms."

((I have no idea how anyone is arranged/sitting, but if anyone is sitting to Helo's right they now have a lion head on the bench beside them))

All she could do is nod softly, frowning a bit as she scooted away from the massive feline head that was all together too close to her, "It's sad, how many of us have been orphaned by a scourge, be it one made up of undead, or one made up of humans..."

A frown quickly crossed his features, his shoulders seeming to slump as he silently nodded his head, "Aye, no one is spared."

Though they had carefully avoided discussing it during their time travelling togethor, Reyvan suspected that Helothannin still held some degree of prejudice against the Forsaken for their Scourge-like appearance. Normally this angered her, but when she heard the Farstrider speak of his family, she found she couldnt blame him. She understood the pain of loosing your loved ones. She understood the need to place blame. She only wished she had someone to blame for her losses- someone besides herself.

She glanced up at Zadora when she spoke. A scourge of humans? What did she mean? Reyvan tilted her head slightly, looking at the paladin questioningly, but she didnt ask out loud. If Zadora wanted to explain, she would, but Reyvan wouldnt put her on the spot.

Abruptly Helo turned his attention to his mug of water, focusing quite intently on refilling it from the pitcher.

"No one can hope to weather a war and come out unscathed," he said quietly. "Some are hit harder than others...and when the war ends, some idiot starts another."

He went to take a drink, paused at a quiet query from Noamuth, and looked down at the lion with an eyebrow slowly raising. "Your nose won't fit in this mug, so no you may not have a drink from it. Go get my bag, the middle-sized one with the buckle strap, and bring it here, I'll get you a bowl so you don't make a mess."

Nodding slightly, Dora sighed, her voice quiet as she spoke, "Defias murdered my parents when I was young." Swallowing, she was unable to meet any of their eyes, not even sure why she was sharing this, especially with the addition of this new elf - she hadn't even told Helo and Rey yet and they'd been travelling together for so long...

She could still see it, in her head - she was only three, right on the cusp of four. The men in bright red bandannas had poured through the front door of their single story farm house, laughing and making terrifying faces as they all patted her on the head - or, in a few instances, places not near as innocent. It wasn't a minute after that when the screams of her mother and the curses of her father reached her ears, then the sound of something ripping, a faint cry of "Za-" and then a broken sob of pain.

She couldn't move, or breathe, or even think. She didn't know what was going on. She didn't understand. All she could do was stand there, rooted to the spot in front of the door, and when the men finally trooped back out, nothing but tarnished baubles in their hands, and gave her those same sick smiles... their bandannas were darker now.

At the time she hadn't understood it, but she could still see it now, when she closed her eyes, and the words to describe the new color of their bandannas came to her in an instant - blood red. That's what she remembered the most.

A sigh, tense, bordering on broken, "... I opened the door for them."

Sebastian didn't quite know what to say, his mouth falling open in silent words. His gaze rose to meet the paladin's face, looking upon nothing but forehead as she kept her own gaze low. He felt his body lean forward, hand stopping just in front of her upon the table - with a simple nod he offered what few words he had, "The past is hard; I admire your strength."

He was sincere about what he said. The few hours he had known this trio, she had been the more quiet, stoic of the bunch. She seemed to never break the character, her strong nature impressing him. He'd wish he had known her better - easier to find more eloquent words for her sudden reveal. However, that were the job of her friends. He was just an outsider.

Reyvan set down her cup with a quiet thunk. Looking at Zadora, her forehead was creased with sympathy. She looked down at the table, then back up at Zadora. She let out a sigh, and without really thinking about it, she reached across the table to touch the paladin's hand with her own cold, boney one. "Shit, Dora," she murmured, "I am so sorry."

She didnt know what else to say, didnt know what she could posssibly say to take the pain away from Dora's face. Though the paladin was usually quite stoic, during their time travelling togethor she had shown herself to have a deeply emotional side. She held in her heart a deep love for the Light, for her people, for the people she cared about. In a way, Reyvan admired that. In their harsh world, it was tempting to shut off your emotions to protect yourself, shut off your love- for deep love leads to deep pain in the end. Reyvan knew this from personal experience. From the love she'd had for her parents, to the love she'd had for Edwina, to the love she'd had for the Dark Lady and all she represented- it had all led to pain.

Helo very gently laid a hand on Zadora's shoulder, then brought it back to lace his fingers in front of his face, elbows propped on the table, so he could rest his chin on his hands.

"...it makes it all the easier to put yourself squarely between the innocent and danger, doesn't it?" he asked softly.

After a moment, he inhaled deeply. "I lost my mother, my father, and all six of my sisters in the undead siege of the Sunwell. I was just a young man when I buried my family...save for my father." His expression hardened briefly. "I never found him. I pray to any deity or divine power listening that he isn't among the remnant of the Scourge."

He let his gaze drop to the table. "I sometimes wonder...is he out there, trapped in undeath? Waiting for me to send his soul on?" After a moment, he chuckled bitterly. "I don't know that I would even recognize him, or if I'd be strong enough to do the deed."

Taking a deep breath, Dora was able to pull herself together enough to look up at her companions, genuinely touched by their shows of compassion. Though she questioned herself, when she was speaking, as to why she was even telling them these things, now that the words were out it felt as though some pressure in her chest had released - at least a little, "Yes, it does..." Giving them all a wan half smile, she gently squeezed Reyvan's hand, not caring that she touched bone instead of flesh, "It's not hard at all, to throw myself in harm's way for innocents..." In her head, she finished the rest of that sentence silently, completing the thought, 'For people who didn't cause the death of their parents...'

Nodding gratefully to Sebastian in silent thanks for his kind words, she then turned to look at Helo, sorrow in her own eyes for him, "Do you... intend to try? To find out?"
