It started as something that was a clever means to an end, but eventually grew to define sentient existance across the galaxies. Each species has their own mechanical roots. For instance, the Ra Siph have always had a sophistocated style to their gadgets and weaponry, while the Kyuugi possess instruments crude in appearance, but effective. The Scyreks have always mostly bought their technology from other species. Now-a-days, with the systems virtually turning into a melting pot of life forms, a lot of hybrids are popping up. Hybrid machinery typically has a longer shelf life, due to flaws in constrution being re-worked by the friendlier neighbors.

Comsumer Electronics

Saters have been the leaders in luxurious engineering for over fourty years now, and at times have hurt more than helped. The Vector Assembly took charge of the regulation because the cosmos saw a dramatic decrease in educational interest after the newest version of the middle-class home network computer, which is capable of virtually wiping your ass for you. There was a period of intellectual stagnation for everyone but the Androids, causing more than a few socioeconomic problems.

The internet, simply referred to as 'The Web' now, is still the best place to gather information and meet people within a safe and protected environment. Books remain souly for the people who enjoy having something physical to read in their hands. The Web is a virtual experience, complete with touch-sensor technology, but buffers physical pain unless playing a game. These days, you can opt for a quick five-minute surgical procedure to be able to connect, simply using brain power, or you can choose to use Net Nodes - small devices placed on either side of the head which use electric impulses to manipulate the senses and stimulate the correct mental regions. There is a specific model for each species, and they run for a lot less money compared to the surgery. Many have turned Net Nodes into fashion statements, modeling them after sleek eyewear and sometimes head gear.

It is a booming business with an extremely delicate regulation system. Programs and machinery created to perform simple labor tasks or simple thought processes are judged much more harshly than something that could actually benefit, like completely automated irrigation systems. At times, consumer technology has proven far more dangerous that blunt weaponry. It is customary to teach children the dangers of disrespecting technology early in their lives.

Terms -
  • Skillsoft - Software designed to be utilized by an artificial intelligence system. Skillsofts are the names for the programs Androids use, to be downloaded or uploaded into (or from) their regular system functions.
  • Colosseum - Advanced holographic gaming systems intended for public display. Gamers may remotely access Colosseums with long-distance signals, allowing them to be far away while a holographic image representing them is shown on an arena-style field, located in all major cities. Colosseum battles display real movements, so gamers must be athletic to contend. You may usually schedule battles for a certain time and day with an opponent (or multiple), as long as there isn't a tournament on the day of your event.

Known Languages:
  • Argot - Commonspeak. The universal language of trading. In modern cultures, many choose to teach this to their young as a first language, so they may have the advantage of learning several later in life. Argot borrows vocabulary and rules from several different languages, and is by far the hardest to try to learn.

  • Anglo - This is the lesser-used language of Celestine, used mostly by Humans who were born around the city of Mount Janeiro and in the villages of the northwest sector of the planet.
  • Ancient - Once it had a proper name, but over the years it's been lost and replaced simply with Ancient, and is a forgotten language only spoken fluently by the Ra Siph. They do not share this language, coveting it instead as some sacred piece of their history.
  • Auldunnak - is the native language of the Kyuugi, and has two specific dialects: Dangiesh, which is spoken almost everywhere, and Koreth, which is generally reserved for politicians and the high-class as a formal dialect.
  • Ba'Ggoba - A language developed by the Un'Gaani, it is heard spoken often in trade and intergalactic caravans, and acted originally as the made trade language before Argot. It is very easy to learn, and taught at most universities.
  • Huatl - The native language of the Quetsuba, it is derived from three different, original languages: Caxcohuatl, Nahohuatl, and Coatlha, all of which are now considered dialects still used today, albeit sparsely. It is rather challenging to learn, and can only be taught properly from the universities on Rhis, as well as a spare few on Oridus.

Transportation

Most sentient types genuinely appreciate choices in vehicles - as well as available customization options - for a myriad of purposes. Dashboard and engine systems are of the utmost importance when deciding what to drive. Some systems offer voice or cerebral controls, while others rely only on sight and touch. System voices come in every language with various dialects, and some crafts are better than others depending on who built them.

Life support systems vary depending on a craft's passengers. Type B races will sometimes flood their interiors with hydrogen-rich fluids, while Type A typically stick with air and breathable oxygen. As far as gravity goes, there are two primary solutions: orbitals and Quantum Drives. Both of these are intended for large crafts, such as stations and cargo ships. Personal crafts are often too small to support either system. Orbitals will induce severe nausea and discombobulation within a small scale, and the quantum drives will destroy the transport. Because of this, there is typically no gravity inside personal crafts.

Orbitals work by constantly rotating the main areas of the station around a central axis, similar to the motion of a planet. The centripetal and centrifugal forces imitate gravity, and the speed of rotation determines the weight of an object. With most orbitals, you cannot feel the motion, as they are too large.

Quantum Drives are nifty little things, designed by Ra Siph and Saters (during the first years of their introduction to space). By manufacturing small black holes and maintaining them, crafts are capable of using their mass and pull to simulate gravity. The up-side to this is that if the craft has a Quantum Drive, the structure of the rest of the ship can be almost anything. In addition, they tend to move much, much more quickly than an orbital could (orbitals are typically used for stationary crafts, and Quantum Drives for units intended specifically for fast transportation). The down-side, though, is that the drive must be kept far away from any other object, and the force of gravity will not remain consistent throughout the craft (usually this means you get heavier towards the engine room, and lighter towards the outer hull). These drives are protected by a globe of special glass, developed by the Norites to provide as much security and disaster-prevention as possible. This casing usually rests just beyond the black hole's event horizon, so there is little possibility of anything getting sucked in.

Craft Classes
Ordered from largest to smallest (on average)

  • Station - These monstrosities are fit to sustain whole populations of creatures, and often do for several generations. Most of them have many regions, for various purposes, within. Anything except for a few larger Mothership models can typically board the docks.

  • Mothership - These crafts are specifically utilized for science and exploration. They are capable of sustaining a colony of people for centuries before food, water, and life support systems begin to fail. The engineers typically know in advance what they are building one of these for, and so many are outfitted with circumstantial equipment. Cargo ships and War Birds cannot land on a Mothership, but everything else which is smaller can.

  • Cargo - Cargo vessels are exactly as they sound. They're made to transport enormous quantities of resources and materials across long distances, but are not built to sustain over twenty to forty crew members on a regular basis. Their storage bays typically do not have life support, but wealthier companies who can afford a high-maintenance system may have them installed. This is favored by the customers because the atmosphere is easier on the load of goods, like a heated/air-conditioned storage unit.

  • War Bird - The Motherships of badassery. War Birds are smaller, but they are generally loaded with a menagerie of weapons, and act as armada squad leaders as well as temporary residences for the duration of the journey, which could be quite long. Up to six-hundred Star Fighters can be comfortably stored inside. The Allied Civics possess most of the War Birds, but some have been ingeniously engineered by a third party for pirates. All of these come equipped with stealth capabilities, invisible to the naked eye, and are only able to be spotted on specialized radar systems. They also possess varying levels of shield technology.

  • Coach - Only slightly smaller than War Birds, most Coach ships are designed for free public transportation between worlds and stations. They are equipped with entertainment facilities, many places to eat, and public sleeping chambers which are usually quite comfortable. Resort ships are a subclass, and are for paying customers to take a holiday. Resort ships can have anything from special excursion deals to nature reserves, to spas and tours.

  • Star Fighter - The second smallest craft class are military and weapon-specialized ships, used as infantry or armed scouts. A typical fighter can comfortably fit up to five people. Many unarmed fighters are used as personal ships, but what you can afford is generally what it comes equipped with. These vessels easily slip in and out of atmospheres, making them useful for traveling across planets. They are commonly seen because industries continue making them for public use, despite the disapproval of some factions...

  • Pod - These small ships are only about the size of a bedroom, and are meant for short-distance travels (most often back and forth from orbit to a planet/ship). Most possess invisibility cloaks, which protect them from radar detection. They cannot, however, support weapon systems. Pods are mass-produced and available to the general consumer. Many use them as permanent living spaces.

The Latest Fashions

You don't just wear clothing these days, you can live in them. Of course, it's not always in an alien's best interest to keep in touch with the trends, and some will always prefer traditional textiles. Regardless, feats of science have presented us with some handy second skins:

Exoskeletons -
Travelers buy them like they would cameras and fanny-packs. Especially if you come from a planet with a low gravity field, you would want this to help augment your strength on a rock with more density. Due to this ability, a license to carry one must be purchased from the Vector Assembly, and they are handled with as much care and caution as weaponry. It was initially intended to merely speed up travel time and reduce the aches and pains of getting acquired to a new gravity field, but they've been utilized more and more as weapons as the years passed. The suit covers the entire body, and often comes with its own respiratory helmet for journeys through harmful atmospheres. The reason why they are referred to as Exoskeletons is the fact that they are just that. Synthetic muscle tissue covers one's own to increase mass and density, and it ends up making one resemble an insect. Certain styles and colors can subdue that resemblance.

They also come in various force intensities, so if you're a Human going to Abaddon, you'll need a much bigger upgrade than the one you might use for Tundra. The Allied Civics typically outfit all their soldiers with these.
