As seen over on another forum last week people can cause severe damage to the site if they get your password, so this blog will look at steps to prevent your password from getting used and abused:

First of all make sure your password follows these simple steps

* Does it contain at least 10 characters?
* At least 40% of which are numbers?
* There are no dictionary words at all?
* Is it just a random mix of numbers and letters?
* You changed it in the last month or two?
* You haven't told anyone it or written it down where someone else may see it?

A lot of people make big mistakes with passwords. They keep the same password for years, never changing it, and put in some dictionary word, so they can remember it easily'. I mean OK, partly that's the point, something they can remember, but if you think about it, anyone else can easily remember it too - it's dangerous - there are brute force attackers out there which would easily crack your password within hours if not minutes if it's just a dictionary word.

Plus you have to make sure you don't use the same password on all the sites you use, think about it, you have one password such as "joeblogs10" and you use it for your facebook account, twitter, ebay, paypal and all your forum accounts, can you imagine the damage that could be caused if someone figured it out, they could send spam to your friends, get a lot of your personnal details such as bank details, purchase items using your paypal account etc, plus if you are staff on various sites and have moderator or admin powers, they could ruin your site or someone elses, especially a free host one as getting back ups are not so easy, would you want all that on your conscience, look at Advertise Hotspot a free hosted forum, a few staff accounts had their passwords cracked and now the forum is pretty much buggered.

Make sure if you have accounts use seperate passwords for each account and use sites like those below to generate you a password:

It's definitely good to have a different password for all the stuff you care about. :)
