ATI Crossfire woes [Solved]; Parts will also apply to nvidia SLI users

Any of you guys using a crossfire setup?

I recently got hold of another 1GB 5770 from fleabay and expected to see a pretty good jump in performance. In 3D Mark it jumped from 2740 to 4900 so all looked well but in black ops it's twitchy on some of the maps. Grid is probably the worse one so far. Updated my bios this morning and am still on the case but to save me reinventing the wheel has anyone been here before??

Cheers.

Have you made sure that the config files for both multiplayer and singleplayer have the multigpu set to on?

Open the files config_mp.cfg and config.cfg in the players folder of the Black Ops Steamapps/common/call of duty black ops with word pad and check to make sure the setting is

seta r_multiGpu "1"

If you can use a GPU monitoring tool, keep it overlayed on the game and check to make sure both cards are using significant percentages. I use EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner for my SLI Nvidia set up.. You can configure to show an On Screen Display of FPS, temps and GPU usage - very handy for finding problems. I believe Afterburner will work with the ATI cards you have...
Set the OSD to display the parameters you want and then minimise and start the game.

What yr describing sounds like it may be micro-stutter and it can be a problem with dual cards of both Nvidia or ATI.
You could try:
removing the FPS cap of 85ish in the game by changing seta com_maxfps to 0 or some value like 125. The former will remove the cap and the latter will set an upper maximum of 125. Turn Vsync off if it's not already.
You can edit the config_mp.cfg file or change it in the console whilst in-game: /com_maxfps 0 or /com_maxfps 125

This may move the stutter out of noticeable range perhaps.

Also, dual cards can be bottlenecked by a weak CPU, I had terrible issues with a GTX570 and a Q6600 at stock clocks. I got very poor GPU usage but high CPU usage - classic bottlenecking of the card by too little data being sent to it.

If both yr cards are being fed enough data and Vsync is off with the in game cap of 85 removed, then you should see both cards maintaining a high usage in the on screen monitoring tool.

Apologies if you have tried all this...
Might help?
:-)

Hey Gringo. I did some of the cfg file changes last night but didn't change the maxfps so I've just bumped it up to 125 and disabled vsync. One of them didn't have have multithread set either.

I'll have a look into the monitoring tool bud too sounds like a good idea.

What I did do last night was install the latest catalyst application profiles, in game i now get a little 'powered by crossfire' logo in the top right so i guess they installed properly, damned if I can see and difference in performance as a result tho :)

Thanks for you help bud, I'll let you know how i get on :)

Hi again - the multithread config setting isn't relevant as people thought it had to do with multi-threaded cpus, i.e multi=core processors with hyperthreading. Turns out it is a development option that is not used, so just make sure that the multiGPU setting is a t 1 for both SP and MP configs. Leave the multithreaded setting at 0. So, in the config file:

seta r_multiGpu "1"
seta r_multithreaded_device "0"

also, set /seta cl_maxpackets "100"
This allows more frequent communications with the server. Probably not going to make a difference but is a good match for the FPS...
Also, perversely, the game runs better apparently when the video settings are maxed out if you have a good graphics set-up as more load is put on the video cards rather than the processor, so turn everything up! AA at X16 and textures to manual and extra.

Don't forget to update the sound drivers for yr PC too as this can make a difference...

:-)

right. did as you suggested mate and whacked everything up to max and all seems well. played grid on combat training and there was no jerking at all. I'll have a go online later on and see what happens :)

worked a treat buddy. I never thought to maxing everything out to be honest as I didn't think my rig was good enough. Dead chuffed with it now though. Thanks very much mate :)

Please use edit instead of double/triple posting as it keeps the thread tidy.

Two bits of weirdness....

1. Emblem are corrupted. If I look at Gringos player card it has a pile of emblems with his on top.
2. The floor on summit flashes like a strobe very annoying even for the half a second you can see through the floor.

It was like it before the above changes so I dunno. If I quit out on summit and rejoin all is well.

Most likely to be a driver issue - SLI or Crossfire tends to be quite driver dependant.
For SLI, there are actually various methods for utilising the 2 cards:

The cards can be used to assign one card to one part of the screen or to render alternate frames and so on. I got flashing on Crysis 2 and BFBC2 which was fixed by driver revision, so keep an eye out for the latest ATI Catalyst drivers. If there is an option to use an alternate rendering method in the control panel, have a wee tinker and experiment. Maybe another rendering scheme will be better. Have Afterburner running as well to monitor FPS performance.
