Hi all, just went out to check rabbits and one kit out of my three week old litter seems to have a problem. She looks perfectly healthy, but when I examined her there was gunk stuck on her butt. When I tried to wash it off, I felt it was kinda swollen and full feeling. Then when I put a slight pressure on it a ton of liquid poo came out and then she started bleeding. Do you think it was just stuck, dried poo or something else? She was OK yesterday AM when I checked them. Thanks |

Sounds like what a lot of us call "Poopy Butt". Kits under 8 weeks seem to be the worst about getting it. Some older ones do to far various reasons. Treatment- Keep clean, check & wash with a gentle soap twice a day if dirty. For infection you can put a triple antibiotic ointment on the area or even go-dry penicillin g. For swelling I have heard of applying preparation h or other hemorrhoid ointment. Make sure the rabbit is getting enough fiber through hay, oats, ect. |

Thanks for the advice. I've only used injectable penicillin for my large animals. If it does get infected is there a certain penicillin for rabbits? Thanks |

Little one seems to be doing much better today. Keeping her clean and putting antibiotic ointment on her. Seems to be more comfortable although the hair around is matted and she still bleeds a little when I wash her. Thanks for the advice! |

Just a thought. Have you tried to cut the mats away? With my Lionheads, do get mats as well. As they are not being shown, I do cut the mat out. Just watch the skin as rabbit skin is really thin. I guess that's why you are getting the bleeding while washing? Just a thought. KAZ |
