This evening I noticed that my 5 wk. old Holland kit was tilting his head. I had had him out to hop around with his littermates and another litter and just noticed it a few minutes after I put him back in his cage. Now, of course I noticed it right after I accidentally closed the cage door on one of his front feet. It just pinched his paw, it's not a tight door. At first I though something might have happened to his leg, but he's not limping and it seems fine now. He is acting completely normal, drinking and eating, hopping around fine. His head was fine yesterday and I didn't notice anything when I was playing with him earlier. It's just the slightest tile, and when prompted with an oat he will turn his head the other way. Can Wry Neck present itself with no other symptoms, or could I have caught it right away? I have heard of another breeder treating a head tilt in young kits with olive or vegetable oil in the ear because they thought that the kit had something stuck in its ear. I was thinking of trying the oil tonight and if I don't see any immediate improvement treating with Ivomec paste tomorrow. Of course, this is the only kit out of 5 who is spoken for AND my grandma is supposed to take over his care tomorrow while we are out of town. *sigh* |

I would definitely treat tomorrow if the tilt is not better. Safegaurd seems to be gentler in the little ones, if you have it. The olive oil should not hurt anything and will help if an ear infection is starting or even ear mites. Hope he pulls through and gets back to normal quickly. |

Thanks for the tip about Safeguard... I will look into that. Would the dosage be the same as for Ivomec? ETA: Also, here's a couple of pictures of the poor guy. He doesn't look nearly as bad as the severe cases I've seen pictures of. Edited by NCK, Dec 29 2013, 10:52 PM.

Head tilt doesn't look bad at all. Sounds like he's not running in circles when you had him out which shows they are disoriented. Do you see rapid eye movement? Probably not if he's not disoriented. Just a little tilt which could indicate something in his ear, or an infection coming on. Catching it fast like you did, treating right away, most head tilts will eventually disappear. My Neville's was worse off than your little guy and Neville's fine now. Took about a good month and a half, (he was 13 weeks), but now he's our "Level" Neville. Wouldn't know he was even sick. And hasn't been sick since. Fingers crossed for your little guy for a quick recovery. The person who's got him on hold is getting a lovely Holland. KAZ |

You probably caught it quickly (nice). I would begin treatment immediately... I used Ivomec but heard that puppy Panacur is better. http://www.hoppinherdofhares.com/wryneck.html Good luck! Let us know how it goes. |

Thanks everyone. Panacur would be my first choice. It seems like Fenbendazole is very effective. I read up on Safeguard (Equine Dewormer) and found that it also contains Fenbendazole. I'll see if I can get some Panacur from my vet. I should also be able to get Safeguard at TSC, but if not I'll just use the Ivomec. Dosage for Ivomec is 1/10 cc per lb. If I can get the Safeguard I would think it's the same dosage. I've also read of some different dosage frequencies, but think I'll try it today and again 7 days later, and recommend to the buyer if they still want him to treat as a preventative every 3 mos. Hoping for the best for him while we're away. I've got some baby food and Bounce Back packed in case he takes a turn for the worse, but his case seems pretty mild so far. |

I use the Safegaurd for Goats. The dosage is 6/10cc per 25 pounds. For the Lionheads I use .1 to .2 cc each. I a drop or two in the ears. Works great on ear & fur mites. |

Just wanted to give a little update. Jingle's head tilt is now essentially gone! By his second day with the tilt, it was a little worse than in the pictures I had posted. I started treatment that day. He never worsened or developed any other symptoms. Hopefully I just caught it very early and this will be the last we see of it. I thought I would share what I did in case it could help anyone else out:) As soon as I noticed his tilt, I dropped some olive oil into his ears to rule out the possibility of him having anything stuck in his ears. I did go ahead and do an "emergency" weaning and separated him from his mom and sisters that night. By the second day (Monday), the oil didn't seem to have worked, but the tilt hadn't worsened significantly. I used Safe-guard Equine Dewormer, 25 gram Paste 10% with Fenbendazole. The dosage was 1/10 cc per pound. He weighed 14 oz., so I gave him the dosage for 1 lb. I repeated the dosage every other day for a total of 3 times. By that time (Friday) his tilt was barely noticeable. I think I'll give him one more treatment in a day or two as a preventative. Here he is today. He's just a tiny little guy. He must have been feeling good, because he was going binky-crazy! |

Thanks for posting an update on the little guy. What a cutie! Love the spikes, lol. Great to hear about binky-crazy, as to me, it's really showing his confidence in his balance, which head tilt affects. Thanks for sharing your treatment method as well. Very helpful indeed. Always have olive oil in the house but can get the Safe-guard Equine Dewormer at a TSC near us. Good to be prepared. And definitely a treatment method to try. Just look at the result. Thanks again NCK for sharing this experience here. So glad the outcome was positive for such a lovely little guy. KAZ |
