So sorry you are going through this, but thanks for posting the information you did regarding what you are doing for frostbite. Definitely could help those going through this experience you are going through. I'm just so grateful my rabbits are inside. Not trying to rub it in, my hats off to ALL those who have rabbits outside. Extreme weather is so tough. But you are acting on this immediately which gives your rabbits a good chance to recover. Hoping Zephyr's swelling goes down. And if not the injectable does the job to help him. KAZ |

Gave all 3 injectable (LA200 - 1/4 cc) last night. Really don't like the swelling on Zephyr. The other two were more as a preventative. The painkiller Neosporin seemed to really help Vern -- first time since he's been in that he polished off his entire dish of food. I've been completely filling dishes twice a day since bringing them in - which is more than their usual portions - Vern was only nibbling at his, Zephyr eating close to his normal amount (always some food left, but eating more than half) and Victor polishing his off every time. |

Thoughts for Zephyr. Hope the swelling goes down now that he's had his injection. So glad to hear the Neosporin is helping Vern. KAZ |

How's Zephyr and Vern doing today? Hope the injection made some kind of difference for Zephyr. KAZ |

Zephyr still looks bad - all 4 paws have some degree of swelling. Will give him another injection tonight. Vern is definitely getting better. The tiny spots on his front paws have all turned nice and pink, the two spots (dime sized) on his back paws are pink around the edges. Victor is significantly better on 2 paws, the third is starting to get some swelling and the 4th is just in such bad shape (still really black on most of the underside) that I'm just not sure it will ever heal right. He's at least got a good appetite - I'm giving him 3-4 cups of food per day (trying to free-feed) and he just devours it all. Also switching back to the regular Neosporin - I think it was promoting healing better than the painkiller version. |

Thanks for the update. It's so good to hear that Vern and Victor are doing well. Hopefully the next injection for Zephyr brings down the swelling. KAZ |

Got Moonshadow moved back out to the barn last night - only to discover that Star now has minor frostbite (tiny black spots on her toes) and had to come in. Helped the girls clean cages this afternoon. We have 7 empty holes in the barn and I was hoping to rearrange and bring another large cage into the porch 'infirmary'. Instead, we wound up rearranging around cages that had trays too frozen to budge. All bunnies in the barn have nice clean trays, but all the empty ones are frozen. The three empty cages stacked outside are frozen into a snowbank. So Star will just have to make do with the angora carrier for another day - and I will hit tractor supply for another cage tomorrow. Sigh - 10 empty cages, but I'm buying another. Can it PLEASE thaw soon? |

So sorry to hear about Star. And all those frozen trays. Hoping you get thawing weather soon. We have rain right now, mixed with snow. They are predicting the temperature to drop this morning and it will turn to snow. Oh boy, what a drive for my husband. What a mess. Haven't wished for Spring this much in a long time. But unfortunately "Phil" saw his shadow. Six more weeks of this. Yuk! Can't wait to the nicer weather so that I can get the Big bunnies out to explore the backyard. And the little ones to frolic. They all just love the difference of being outside. And I want my big bunnies to experience the outside too. KAZ Edited by ZRabbits, Feb 3 2014, 06:33 AM.

Sigh, bad luck. So sorry. It's hard to deal with. Hoping for a nice, warm day to thaw out your cages and a speedier recovery of your bunnies!

We have lost a few to the unusually colder temps. I think I am going to have to give Safegaurd anytime we use straw hay to keep bunnies warm. They seem to start loosing weight afterwards like they get a parasite from the hay. Most if not all are eating well so weight should not be a problem. We also lost one LH doe to a freak accident. 3-5 got out of their cages one night. 2 of them were top row cages. 1 doe is fine, but my daughter found 1 doe with with a 2"x3" board laying across the top of her with all four limbs stretched out like =o=. We got 4-5" of snow Sunday and due for some today (Tues). It is 32* so who knows how this is going to play out. May all your buns stay warm. |

Sorry to hear about the straw hay and it's affects on your rabbits. Always my concern as well that something is hiding in the bale. Knock on wood, have a great hay supplier with very clean hay. We always leave it outside, protected from weather, just cold temperature. Mine are eating tons of hay and thankfully not loosing anything. Maybe because they are inside? Though they are eating more than they do in the Summer months, even though they are inside. Did you check their stool? If there are parasites, there should be evidence of parasites or eggs in their stool? My husband said maybe they are just upping their activity to keep warm? So sorry to hear about the loss of your LH. KAZ |

Sorry for your losses - especially the 'freak accident'. stress - and cold is a definite stressor - can make rabbits susceptible to all kinds of things that they normally deal with just fine. Stuffing cages with hay in the winter also tends to collect urine/feces - no matter how good you are at cleaning and replacing it just doesn't go through the mesh floor as well. That can also tend to concentrate parasites. Hearing lots of cases of 'wry neck' (not necessarily E. cuniculi, but symptoms matching that suite) from folks on the local facebook group this winter. Having reviewed that one now, I'm wondering whether that might have been what hit our three minirexes - none of mine progressed to head tilt, but the early symptoms (hunched posture, sudden weight loss, darting eyes, weaving) all match. I'll count us lucky we only lost one and that the other two responded well to nothing more than warmth, water, electrolytes and probiotics. |

A lot of "wry neck" this winter? I wonder if it has to do with cold drafts. I think that's what got Neville. Nice spring day, but still cool air. Next day, come back from getting Luna, and we have a case of the spins which turned to wry neck. Caught it in time so the affects are long gone. So sorry hear of the troubles others are having. Unfortunately a lot of cases like this, the kits get put down due to the scare of E. cuniculi, which I can understand. KAZ |

Lost Josh's blue buck - Moonlight - last night. Dead in his cage. No clue what happened there -- Jillian didn't notice anything off when she brought them morning water (and definitely fine when I was out the night before). He'd eaten his food and water dish was the typical half-inch of ice left in the bottom, so doesn't seem like 'gut' issues. Snowstorm out there right now -- actually feels kind of warm at 20 degrees. But supposed to drop back into single digits tonight. |
