You're Welcome Neubunny. Tough winter. And you have shown how strong you are and will go to all lengths to help your animals in need. With frostbite, it's touch and go. Even with humans. You gave it your best shot. It's tough, but we are here. Mother Nature has no favorites. My thoughts to all those who have their animals outdoors. This has been a tough summer and it looks like it's going to be a tough winter. Stay safe. KAZ Edited by ZRabbits, Feb 13 2014, 07:36 AM.

For anyone keeping track, I've added two more items to my 'arsenal' against frostbite ... 1) low dose of antibiotics (0.5 cc of LA200 every other day - Vern only) keeping a close eye on his appetite as I'm a little nervous that the antibiotics may upset their stomachs. But, so far so good. Holding off on trying it on Star as her appetite isn't that great to begin with. 2) spraying the cages and resting mats down with Vanodine daily (don't know why I didn't think of that sooner - so simple - reads as safe to use directly on animals, and it is both antibiotic and antiviral -- and it was sitting in my cupboard the whole time) Fingers crossed that these prevent secondary infections. Vern's feet have lost nearly all the black. So far, staying nice and pink. Watching closely as this is the stage where the other two suddenly showed signs of swelling. Star's feet look great -- she does a wonderful job of keeping them all clean herself. Her ear, on the other hand, looks really gross. I think she's going to lose about an inch off the tip. But, no sign of the infection spreading farther down the ear. Keeping the tip coated with neosporin. Unlike her feet, she doesn't wash the medicine off her ear. Lost Storm (black otter minirex, Star's mother) last night. She was fine when Jillian brought them all water after school (and behaving perfectly normally when I was out the night before). When we went to do evening chores, she was hunched and off balance and cold ears. So we brought her in. Like Moonshadow last month, she got limp/lethargic as she warmed up. So we put her in a carrier to rest - planning to syringe water into her if she didn't drink on her own in an hour or so. Unlike him, she didn't make it that long -- she was dead when we went back in to check. 5th minirex we've had go down with similar symptoms (3 died - Moonblossom, Moonlight and Storm, 2 recovered -- Moonshadow and Star's recovered twice now). I'd been thinking of this as hypothermia/dehydration. But we hit 34 yesterday (a heat wave compared to the last few weeks) and water dishes just had skim ice last night (not frozen solid). So sorry to hear you lost Storm. This weather has been tough on all animals and humans. Really stressful for all. Don't care how hardy the animals and humans are. Hopefully Spring comes real soon, so the animals and humans can relieve this Winter Stress. KAZ |

How's everyone doing? With this slight "heat wave" for you, hopefully this has given your buns a good chance to heal. KAZ |

so far so good. nice to go out to the barn and find water in dishes instead of ice. Star's paws look really good. Her frostbit ear drying up at the tip, but looks like a nice clean line between healthy and dead tissue. A bit concerned about one of Vern's paws this morning -- looks a little redder again - and looks like a bit of blood in the fur (though I can't find any cut and it may just be staining from the vanodine). and 'crusty' on the front paw where he lost the dewclaw. The other hock is healing nicely with fur starting to come back in already! Feeling a little nervous about who I'm going to breed Maia to this spring - Victor was the plan and Vern the backup (though father-daughter is a much closer line-breeding than I like). Anyway, posted on the Michigan rabbit breeders board to see if anyone had a buck available in a suitable color - just testing the waters (and my own superstition that not having a backup is the surest way to jinx Vern's recovery). Got a pm from the breeder I got Maia's mom from that I could use her chocolate herdsire (stud) if in a bind. Rabbit people are so nice! |

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear about Star. Sorry to hear about Vern, but sounds like he is making progress in healing. Fingers crossed. So thrilled to hear of the help you are going to get from another breeder. Yes, some Rabbit People can be very nice and helpful to others. Karma does happen. Good for you! Fingers crossed for Maia's future breeding success. KAZ |

Star lost the tip of her ear this morning - looks to have fallen right off. Looks odd (an inch off her short ears is almost half the ear), but better than the black mess. Edge is nice and pink and looks healthy. Vern is looking better again. Keeping him on the antibiotics. Shots every other day have him less than thrilled to see me now -- he hides in the back of the cage instead of bouncing to the front - but that's OK, we can rebuild trust once he's all better! |

Thanks so much for the update. Glad to hear Star's ear is starting to heal. Glad to hear the tip fell off, and what's left is healthy. Looks odd but going in the right direction. So glad to hear about Vern. Poor thing, understand the hiding. Definitely, you'll build that trust back up after he's better. Experienced this with Neville. KAZ |

Star's feet look all better, but must not feel it. She doesn't look much like a minirex most of the time. When she sits, she rocks her back feet forward (so the hocks aren't against the ground) - which gives her body a perfect semi-arch shape (she has low shoulders to begin with, but this pose looks extreme). And she walks on her toes - more like a cat. Kind of creepy with the half ear and red eyes - I've taken to calling her Zombie-bunny. Really though, just glad she is enough better I can laugh about it. 3 out of 4 of Vern's paws are WAY better. That 4th still has me concerned. Has 'redeveloped' a black mark in the center (tiny, just a couple millimeters) -- doesn't look like the frostbite, more like a blood-blister (soft tissue, not hard like a scab). Anyway, keeping him on antibiotics (shots every third day now) - which has him mad at me. Backing off on the ointment as the front paws which I haven't been treating for a while look better than the back which I have. Course, he also washes his front paws himself way more often (which is why I stopped putting ointment on them, he just washed it right back off). |

Ah, what a pain this must be for you and the bunnies. Still hoping that they will get better soon so that you'll be able to stop worrying about the poor guys. |

So sorry that you are going through all these issues with the rabbits. Not a pleasant way to reduce the herd for upcoming juniors. Hope they keep improving quickly. We have been fortunate to have more does deliver healthy kits that went through the mold poisoning. Very thankful they did not become sterile from it. The herd seems to be doing well except for the buns that dump their feed, they have lost condition, but seem to be regaining it. |
