Zombie bunny? lol. Poor Star. Sounds like her feet are still a bit sore. Hopefully she'll start to look more like a minirex as her feet heal, leaving just the short ear. Her battle scar from this horrendous winter.

Glad to hear about Vern's progress. Wishing him continued success.

 Yay! Vern's dewclaws are coming back! Thought that might have been a permanent loss. I don't think I've ever before been happy to feel nails growing!

His feet are WAY better. Still one spot on one hock I'm watching, but it looks more like sore hocks (from no fur in that spot) than frostbite now. The other hock has mostly furred over, can barely tell where the frostbite was. An the front paws are totally healed. No more antibiotics or ointment now. Just spraying the cages down with vanodine daily. That really seems to promote healing very well.

Star's ear is also healed nicely. Will never be the same, of course, but nice pink skin on the edges. She's also starting to sit/walk more normally most of the time, so her feet must feel better too.

Josh's opal doe, Stella, was badly out of condition at the show Saturday. Judge said it looked like she wasn't drinking enough and suggested adding electrolytes to her water. Josh was worried, so she's moved into the porch now, where the water doesn't freeze. She goes through an amazing amount of water (no electrolytes needed, just no ice) -- her cup is usually half empty by the time I water the other two (so I refill right away) and nearly to completely empty every time we check. Somehow overnight last night she got her water dish loose (it clips to the cage) and it was in the back of the cage this morning. She was guarding it. I grumbled 'you have to let me have the dish if you want more water' - and she actually picked it up and brought it to me! I've never had a rabbit do that! Not sure whether she understood me, or just realized I had the water jug in my other hand, but it was clever either way! We've also more than doubled her feed for now -- fingers crossed I don't overshoot and have her too fat -- we need a litter out of her in a few months - she's the only breeding age minirex left!

Excellent news for Vern and Star. Good for you! Just keep doing what are doing. And Vern's nails, that' waste and it means you have blow flow and healing!

Hoping all goes well for Stella, building up her weight for breeding. Truly believe that Stella understood in her way what you were saying. It's amazing what rabbits pick up through repetition. You have a relationship with your rabbits. That's good.

Every morning, Z-Tribe members have no issues showing me where the food and water bowl is, or even bringing them to me. Maurice actually stacks them in front of his crate door. They know. Just have to be open minded to the signs. Sometimes it surprises you. Z-Tribe members do it to me all the time.

And when it's time for hay, well, have a few Z-Tribe members that help out. Dobby needs to take the first piece to his litter box. Willard, same thing, but he brings his first piece under his shelf to eat, then comes out and attacks the hay. Molly, who I thought was boxing me every time I distributed hay, realize she is just helping me put it down. Not fast enough I guess. Maurice has now decided it's ok to hang his head out of his crate and eat the hay in the storage bin while I'm giving him his hay. I guess it tastes better out of storage bin, lol. Amelia, got to give her lots of hay as she LOVES to tunnel and throw it around, run through it and then finally relaxes to munching on it.

Fun to get to know your rabbits and it's fun when they interact and surprise you. That's what it's about, isn't it?

Vern's forgiven me for all the shots finally -- coming to the front of the cage for pets when I open the door now. He still has one bad spot on that one back paw - but it's down to less than a quarter of the original size, so I'm leaving it alone.

Lost one of Jillian's Jersey woolies (Latte) yesterday though. Kicking myself for not having brought her in (Jillian commented the night before that she hadn't eaten much of her food - we checked her over and didn't see any problems, so just chalked it up to an off day or maybe having accidentally given her more than we thought at the last feeding), though I'm not sure it would have done any good. I think it may have been wool block -- not a problem we've had in the woolies but most of the barn started molting when it warmed up (and then we had another 8 inches of snow yesterday). Jillian's disappointed - she was planning to breed Latte (her shaded doe) to her favorite Prussia (blue pointed buck) this weekend - and second guessing herself too. At the same time, she was still able to comment that 'at least she's only lost one of hers' (Latte) so far this winter. Trying to figure out which of her other does would be a good match. He'd actually make a good test cross to figure out which of her black otter does are hiding marten versus REW and which are hiding blue -- but high odds on getting unshowable martenized points (aka otter points). Not sure if I mentioned elsewhere, but Jillian got a call from a lady that was selling a smoke pearl marten at one of the fall shows (already spoken for when she saw it) - and she has 3 in the nestbox with Jillian at the top of her waiting list. That takes some of the pressure off of doing 'our' JW matches mainly to try to have the color pop for her (she's been searching/breeding for two years without finding one or having one in a litter).

Star is still walking oddly sometimes -- not sure whether her feet still hurt or it's just become a habit. But she's gotten round! She was always a long bunny who ran her cage. Extra food and less exercise (haven't seen her run since the frostbite, though she's rarely resting either) and she has a more proper minirex shape. lol - when she stands/sits normally that is. She still frequently sits with her hocks rocked up (which makes her look semiarch) and walks up on tiptoes (which makes her look creepy-catlike).

Stella is doing really well. Drank like crazy for about 3 days (as in the water dish was empty every time I checked it - which was every few hours if I was home and not sleeping) but has now settled in to a more normal pattern where the dish is about half empty when I check (at normal times of morning, after school and bedtime). Maybe she is just now trusting that it won't turn to ice on her. Still doubling her feed - backed down from free-feeding -- but will probably drop back to normal portions again by the weekend.

What a GREAT update. So glad Vern is happy with you again. Knew he would be. Glad to hear Star and Stella are doing much better.

So sorry to hear Jillian lost Latte. Just such a tough winter for all of you.

Smoke Pearl Marten in the nest box with possibly Jillian's name on it? Fingers crossed! Is she hoping for a doe or buck?

she doesn't care which -- will probably choose (assuming all 3 make it) based on type/color/personality rather than gender.

Hope all 3 make it and they are of the type/color/personality she's looking for. I guess as she's been looking for one for so long, gender really doesn't matter. Either buck or doe, if she gets the type/color/personality she wants, will help her JW program.

Wishing her all the luck!
