I just got a bunny today and the lady said she had to wash it cause it had poop all over it. Which of course sent up red flags to me. Well she said this to hubs as I was down stairs doing laundry. Said it had been eating the cedar chips and that they gave it tetracyclin for it. It just pooped a massive soft poop with tons of mucus. She said her vet prescribed this and that said the bun would be ok but idk just doesn't feel right so wanted to get some feedback. She tends to take her buns away too early from their moms. She gave us one before that was too young and it had gut problems and we had to heal it back to health. I just don't want to get my other babies sick until we can get it checked out on our own. I got the bunbun to drink some water and eat a little hay and some oats. Gentle massaging her tummy. Thanks for any insight..

Sounds like this person shouldn't be breeding bunnies if they continuously have health issues...
And I have always heard that small animals shouldn't be put in cedar chips... wonder why this person has never heard it.

This sounds like it could be mucoid enteritis, which can be deadly. Try to keep it eating lots of hay and drinking water.

I found these links about it:

Thank you.. yup I thought most bun people knew about how bad cedar chips are for the bunbuns. I thought the same as I was looking up things online. Poor little bunbun... I've never seen so much constant mucus coming out. Keeping her hydrated and rubbing her belly ever so gentle. She is eating hay on her own. Yup I agree she should not be breeding them and I will def not be getting anymore from her. She should of been honest and upfront.

Thanks, I hope so too. I forgot to mention there is also a horendous smell. At first I couldn't place it.. but now I remember where I have smelt it before. Long time ago I had a hamster that had wet tail and that is exactly how his poops smelled and I had to nurse him back to health. I went to check on the bunbun and it is covered in runny diarrhea now :/ Poor thing I just keep trying to make sure its eating and drinking till tomorrow. It probably is missing its momma too and siblings. I am not sure the exact age but it looks young.

Hi Glittermomma, Welcome to RA. So sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your bunbun. Definitely sounds serious. Diarrhea, with any aged rabbit, it serious. But with young rabbits, it can be very deadly.

Please keep us posted about your bunbun.

Hope all goes well at the Vet's. Hopefully he can help straighten out your bunbun's gut flora. Once that's straightened out, with a basic diet of hay, water and oats, your bunbun can start to flourish. Just needs a little intervention right now. And being young of age, it may take a bit to get there.

Please keep us updated. Know it must be rough for you to see your sweetie sick. Just don't understand some breeders' train of thought regarding young bunnies.

Sadly we awoke to the passing of Blossom :( I let the breeder know and she let me know that its sibling was also sick and that awhile back she had an outbreak from a pet she had bought. She then tried to persuade me to take a 3 week old baby. I told her that is too young and that she needs to keep her babies with their mom longer or else she is going to keep having problems. At least this little girl got some real love.. even if only for a few hrs. I just feel awful that it suffered.

Oh my gosh... I am so sorry for your loss. No matter how long they have been with you, it's still sad and horrible. You shouldn't have had to go through that... the bunny as well. She needs to smarten up or stop breeding rabbits. Poor things and poor new owners... I hope this person starts caring more about her animals.

So sorry for your loss. You did all you could do. Just way too young to be away from Mom.

Also you did what you could with this irresponsible breeder. You gave her excellent advise on not selling rabbits so young. Now, I would definitely walk away and go somewhere else if you want to enjoy the experience of another bun. Some people just don't learn. Shame for her rabbits.

So sorry for your loss. FYI (for anyone) - Vitamin E squeezed from the capsule at the bunnies mouth (I try to get it on the teeth so they take it) is good for detoxifying. It helped me pull bunnies through a mold poisoning last August. In my research I read Activated Charcoal is good for absorbing toxins that were eaten and then taking the toxin out of the digestive system. ERs use it for people who have overdosed or eaten certain poisons.
