Higher Placement of Uterus?

One of my does, Alice, has developed a rather odd lump on her side over the past week or two, and since I found it it has grown. She has put on a little weight recently too, and today I noticed that her teats appear to be filling up with milk. So, my question is, is possible for her uterus to be placed higher up in her body? I did some searching around about it in humans, since I couldn't find anything on it regarding rabbits, and found out it's not that uncommon in humans.

Really interesting. I would think, as we are mammals too, this, high placement of uterus, could occur in other mammals.

Just on one side? Is this due to carrying the kits on one side of the horn? Reading your post, it sounds like you were unaware of breeding? I guess with the weight gain and milk production, signs of pregnancy?

Finger crossed that all goes well. Hope you update.

I would assume she is pregnant and give her a nestbox - then watch closely as anything odd like this makes it potentially high risk (e.g., could be just a high uterus, but could also be an ectopic pregnancy - where a fetus somehow implants outside the uterus).

Other possibility is that an ovarian cyst or tumor is messing with her hormones -- I've heard of that bringing on milk production in rare cases in humans.

Do keep in touch and let us know how she is doing.

Thanks for the input guys! I asked on another rabbit breeding forum about this, and the only response I got was that rabbits don't have Uteruses (they actually have 2). I gave her a nest box last night, so fingers crossed she's just pregnant. Can't really afford the vet right now, if I could she would've already gone, and sorted this whole thing out.

ZRabbits - Yep, it's just on one side. I've palpated it a few times and it doesn't appear to cause her any pain, in fact she seems quite relaxed and calm. I didn't even suspect her being pregnant until a little while after the lump showed up, so no, I didn't breed her. She's quite an escape artist, so it's possible she got into my buck's pen during one of her outings.

Ahh, see where an escape artist could turn up pregnant. Silly girl.

Fingers crossed for your wayward doe.

understand totally about the vet. hard to justify the expense - especially when/if you know your local vet treats so few rabbits they would likely be guessing too (though at least they have access to X-rays and ultrasound - but that gets really expensive).

fingers crossed for you here too!

As of this morning Alice is still doing great! :) Her milk came in yesterday, so hopefully she'll kindle soon. Her "Sister", Hye Su, has 2 kits so they've been getting an extra meal from Alice. I think she'll be an excellent mom after helping raise Hye Su's kits, she just adores them. Will have to build a new pen for the girls soon, theirs will be quite crowded after these next two litters arrive!

Thanks so much for the update on Alice. Fingers crossed, hope to hear about wiggly babies soon.

Congratulations are in order for Hye Su. Sounds like she's doing well and her kits are getting extra loving from Alice. Neat!
