Jillian put Personality in with Jake Sunday -- and switched for Serenity last night. Counting down now for April litters. Holding off on my FAs and Josh's minirex until it warms up a bit more. Jillian is sandwiched with wanting babies grown enough to evaluate before she leaves for Japan in June. So will risk that we have to move JWs inside to have babies. Jake = broken blue otter, threw smoke pearl for previous owner (when bred to REW, so had to get that shaded gene from Jake). Personality = black otter - she's thrown opal and blue ermine, so she carries dilute. She's also thrown chin, so she carries some recessive C-gene - likely either chin or REW. Fingers crossed for the REW gene, which will draw out Jake's shaded. Serenity = black otter - Personality's daughter. Her father was squirrel (Cameron) so she carries dilute too. She threw Jillian's favorite pointed (Prussia) in her last litter, so I'm pretty sure she carries REW (pointed gene most likely came via the father of that litter - Cooro; Cameron is a REW carrier). Fingers crossed for large healthy litters with some smoke pearl martens! |

Exciting news! Love those JWs, hopefully all goes perfectly! I have 4 does due... blue tort x broken blue tort, tort x sable point (don't think she took, but she is just so uncooperative), tort x broken blue tort and broken black x broken blue tort (no charlies please, hehe). First 3 are due between the 21st-22nd and the last one is due April 7th (haven't palpated her yet). I'm thinking of breeding another doe but I want to see how the first round goes! |

so glad we did this breeding when we did. Lost Jake. Another sudden mysterious - fine in the morning, dead mid-afternoon - just like Latte. A lot riding on these litters now - Jake and Latte were the only shaded genes in the barn. And the breeder who contacted us earlier about smoke pearls in the nestbox lost 2 of the 3. Jillian is still top of the list for that third - but she warned us it looks like a BUB (course that could just be it getting big as it is now a singleton). |

So sorry to hear about Jake. Wow, what's going on? It must be really hard on the rabbits this year, EVERY WHERE. This winter, can't wait until it's over. Maybe because of this up and down weather, it's just putting too much stress on the rabbits? Days are longer now, and snow? That's what we had. Nice coating, but supposed to be in the 60's by the weekend. I couldn't imagine what the Z-Tribe would be experiencing if they were outside here. Again, so sorry. Send Jillian our condolences. Hoping for a nextbox full of healthy kits and one looking just like Jake. KAZ |

I think it is related to the up and down weather -- both of these two went down on days when the weather shifted from 40s back to 20s. But I can't help worrying we have some underlying parasite/disease in the barn. Something that starts growing in the warm-up, but the bunny handles until the stress of the temperature drop. It needs to warm up enough that we can powerwash everything! I don't think I've ever looked forward to spring cleaning quite like this. |

I would think there would be something underlying too, to have two healthy rabbits go down that fast. Definitely would power wash everything, plus treat the floor of the barn. I'm sure you go over the barn thoroughly every spring, but thought I would just put that out there. What a winter you have had. Such sad losses, but you are not alone. Doesn't make it easier but it's just seems everywhere breeders are having issues. KAZ |

So sorry about Jake. I know I worried about the temps here for the rabbits when I first started getting them. It can go from the 20's during the night up to 60 in the daytime. That's just normal for us, usually at least a 30 degree change in weather from night to day all year long. I have to be really careful when I get a bun from somewhere else. Hope spring gets here soon for all of you and get this winter over with. Congratulations on the litters though, hope all are good and healthy! |

oh yes -- spring cleaning involves pulling all the stackers outside to power wash (scrub, burn off wool bits, etc), spray everything with vanodine, raking out the barn (we just have dirt floor) and putting a layer of diatomaceous earth over the whole thing. Huge job, but I always feel better once it is done. But has to warm up enough for hoses to work and for us to not freeze to death (we get pretty wet in the process). soon... |

Wow, definitely a big job, but definitely worth it. I can't say enough good things about DE. Last year we did the whole yard, and will again this year. Could tell it was working when the moles disappeared. No grubs, or insects to eat underground, they vacate. Unfortunately due to the snow, they are back again, with lots of tunnels. Already did the bunny run, now to do the rest of the yard. It's all good clean healthy work and definitely after it's all done, you have gratification knowing that you have done everything possible to keep your livestock healthy. KAZ |

Oh, so sorry about your loss. That sucks. ![]() I also can't wait or nice weather for spring cleaning. The rabbit area in the garage is a big mess! I tried palpating my 6 does that I bred, and they all seem pregnant to me. lol They are due on the 8th and the 11th of April. Good luck with your litters! I hope you have lots of healthy little ones! |
