This girl is 7 weeks old. She is eating, drinking and quite active. Still nursing from mom once a day. I'm not sure what to make of her vent. I don't have a clue of what to do to help the poor girl. I tried holding a wet, warm cloth against it, which is why she is so wet in the picture. Any ideas on what I can do or what the cause of this is? |

Truly not an expert. Haven't seen that many rabbit vents. Definitely not syphilis. Though looks swollen, doesn't look anything like this: http://www.raising-rabbits.com/rabbit-syphilis.html Also read this here: http://www.merckmanuals.com/pethealth/exotic_pets/rabbits/disorders_and_diseases_of_rabbits.html Pasteurella bacteria often cause genital infections (pasteurellosis), which may also be caused by several other organisms. The typical signs include inflammation of the reproductive tract and are usually seen in adults. Does are more often infected than bucks. If both horns of the uterus are affected, often the doe becomes sterile; if only one horn is involved, a normal litter may develop in the other. The only sign of an infection in the uterus may be a thick, yellowish-gray vaginal discharge. Bucks may discharge pus from the urethra or have an enlarged testicle. Longterm infection of the prostate and seminal vesicles is likely. Because the infection can be passed during breeding, infected animals should not be bred. Surgical removal of the infected reproductive organs along with antibiotic treatment is required for pet rabbits. The contaminated hutch and its equipment should be thoroughly disinfected. Diagnosis of pasteurellosis is based on signs and laboratory tests that detect the bacteria. Nasal swab tests can be performed to identify carriers. Treatment is difficult and may not completely get rid of the organism. Antibiotics seem to provide only temporary remission, and the next stress (such as giving birth to a litter) may cause relapse. Doubt it's this, but thought I would put this out there. Seems in the pics there was some discharge? KAZ |

Hmm... honestly, I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Is this the vent area without pressing down? Or is this after being pressed (though your hand isn't there...). Either way, I'm unsure. Doesn't look irritated or anything. I would just keep an eye on it to see what happens. |

This is the vent without being pressed down. It is always like this. I can't even find the opening to identify her sex. I only know she is a doe because I sexed her when she was younger and her vent was normal. Looking back at the picture, I realize that it looks like a normal exposed vent, but that is not the vagina.

Just a thought...the picture isn't clear enough for me to really tell much... How sure are you that she is a doe? Split P bucks can look like does when young and very odd as they grow older... |

Interesting thought. I've never really seen a split penis like this so I'm not sure if that's what it could be. I'll get someone to help me take better pictures later. She's almost 8 weeks old and I'm planning on selling her to make room. I of course can't sell her (or him?) till I am 100% sure of health and that there's no serious problem. |

Exactly, it looks the same. I really have no idea which part I'm looking at.

Is it possible that maybe she only does this when she is lifted up or held? Perhaps like the way bucks sometimes retract their testicles. Only the opposite? Just a thought, but maybe put her on a glass table or something and let her walk around naturally and have a good look at her while she is relaxed. Just a thought! Also, it may be swollen due to the fact of irritation from within? Such as maybe a piece of hay or something? Or it could be an infection as others have said. I would definitely soak her in some epsom salt solution, just to help draw out any infection. |

Hmm... I have had a few younger babies that didn't want their "parts" to pop up. Not in any that age though. I would also wonder if there may be something that irritated it, so her "parts" can't come out any more. Definitely weird, though. Keep us updated on the poor gal. |
