Someone I know has a rabbit with a bulging eye. From the picture she sent me, it doesn't look irritated. It's not red or anything. You can just see a lot more white than normal. The other eye is fine. She says that the rabbit eats and acts normally. Seems to be a tiny bit of wetness around it. It has been like this for quite some time but she's not sure if it was always bulging. What could this be? Does the rabbit need to go to the vet? I just want to make sure. I can add pics if needed.

Could be an abscess that is starting to press on the eye. Tooth abscesses can do this. As the abscess grows, it pushes on the eye, making it bulge. Also causing the eye to water.

Remember, rabbits are prey animals. Prey animals must hide when they are ill. Some rabbits are very good at hiding their weakness, and will act normally. I would advise a vet visit. X-rays will show if their is a problem arising. Better safe than sorry. And as we all know, things happen quickly with buns.

I agree with the above - rabbits are FAR too good at hiding things.

Could be as simple as a hay poke (bit of hay poked the eye), an insect bite next to the eye (swelling putting pressure on the socket), a blocked tear duct, fat deposits (really common in cavies - haven't seen them in rabbits but don't see why they wouldn't get the same), a tooth abscess, or as dangerous as a tumor. No good way to tell. A vet visit would probably be a good idea - if you have a good rabbit vet available.

Sans the vet --
Is this stable, getting worse or getting better? How long has she had it? Sudden onset, or gradual change over weeks?

Is this bilateral or on one side? Bilateral is more likely to indicate a something related to age, stress or diet. On one side an injury, abscess or other medical issue.

Have her eating habits shifted at all? Loss of appetite indicates a more serious medical issue or teeth problems. Overeating/overweight might indicate fat deposits which could be reduced by a shift in diet (lower fat/higher fiber) and exercise.

Check carefully for any other issues - teeth, neck, head. Any swelling, injury, etc that might give a clue?

Very gently massage the area around the eye -- especially the corners where tear ducts are located. Feel any swelling that might indicate a blocked tear duct? Usually, this would cause irritation as well, but I believe they have two tear-producing glands on each eye - so if only one has a problem, it may still be managing to prevent irritation.

That's all I can think to check/try. Be sure to let us know how she does!

How's your friend's rabbit doing? Did she find out the cause of the bulging eye?
