As you guys know I have been selectively looking for a good BEW buck for PJ but I havent had a lot of luck. PJ is about to turn a year old and I had to use one of my moms bucks to use for a cull litter. They will be vienna marked babies and Im kind of excited. They are not going to be used in a breeding program and possibly euthanized but might be sold as pets. It depends on the interest. I love the look of VMs so will be posting pictures of course :)

Heres a pic of the dad and mom. Baby pictures hopefully coming in one month :)

Fingers crossed! Hoping PJ does well for this first time. Preparing her for the next time when you find the right BEW buck.

Okay I understand the need for culling and I'm not against culling aggressive, sick, unwanted rabbits but why would you breed rabbits to get babies that you know you are going to have to cull?

I am not by any means judging or telling you you are wrong, I'd just like to know if there is a reason. I'm always wanting to know more about rabbits, the good & the bad!

Rabbit does not bred before 1 year old often become sterile. If you have a valuable young doe, but no good buck to match with her, you might let her raise a litter that you know won't be show quality -- this prevents her from becoming sterile, as well as lets her practice her mothering skills (a LOT of first time moms lose the litter anyway).

Note - cull does not equal kill, it means 'to select' - in agriculture, it means to select which animals should not be bred. A cull litter is one that you expect will not be good enough to show or breed -- they could still be raised for pets or meat.

Gees, believe me Louie, when I first started to venture into the Rabbit World on the internet, that "cull" word confused me too. Now that I've been involved with lurking and posting opinions for about 3 years I guess, cringe when I see this confusion about culling come up.

Cull to many means to remove from their breeding program. Whether passing them on to a newbie in breeding or someone who would like to experience one as a pet. The other meaning, which means TERMINAL, meaning the rabbit's life is ended. This is the meaning that has started lots of heated debate due to those who feel all animals should have a wonderful life. Not be breed to help feed a family or even a family pet (dog, cat, reptile).

See clearly now both meanings of the word "cull". If done with respect and responsibility, this word is definitely needed to enjoy your rabbit hobby.

Fingers crossed for PJ! Hoping this first litter goes easily, and she shows great mothering skills for future show quality Polish. How's the hunt going for your buck?

I doubt they become sterile, they are just harder to get pregnant, and harder to get a live litter out of. I have seen a 4 year old doe get bred for the first time and produce a live litter
