I think I want 2014 to be a big year of change... some things are already on their way, but some other things might be changing too... I've had a job for a little while now. It's only 3 days a week (4 hours a day = 12 hours), but it's $60 every week. So that's something. lol And as time goes on, I might work more hours... even if I hate work. I am fully aware that I am very lazy! So that is new-ish and different for me. Some people know that I have been battling anxiety, depression and many other things... so just staying with this job has been a big thing for me right now. lol But anyway, this job has been feeding the rabbits (and my new little gerbil buddies). It also helps me pay for new rabbits and shows too. So it has been a blessing that I can save up a little cash here and there.I also have been talking about adding more rabbits into my backyard meat bunny program. I'm no longer going to concentrate much on showing my New Zealands. Too much money buying new and expensive stock for 3 breeds and also showing them. Plus frostbite has permanently altered the ears of 4 of the 5 NZ I have. What a terrible winter it was for them. All the little eared rabbits are fine though. I'm adding a new breed to the program just to add some new colors and patterns now that I can have some fun with them. lol So little Inga is making her way to my place in late May. I've been talking about this in a thread I made in the genetics portion of the forum. She's a lilac japanese Harlequin with a white foot. lol![]() As for some new and less talked about things...... I am selling out of Polish and cancelling my "partnership" with my friend. That's a long story and some close friends have heard a lot of my complaining. ![]() It's just hasn't been much of a partnership for over a year and I'm just over it now. I haven't been into the Polish much recently for some reason either and I don't find that I am attached to many of them. Which is odd for me. lol So I will be selling 6 of the 9 Polish I have right now. I have two does and a buck that I just love... so they will stay for now. Three generations actually... Alex, then Sparkler which is Alex's daughter and Hector, which is Sparkler's son.... making him Alex's grandson. Something about this strain of bunnies! ![]() So that being said, I am going to try out another breed that I have been very interested in for a long time now... Mini Lops! ![]() I am going to get some newer and probably a little bigger of cages too. It will be great to finally fix up the rabbit area in our garage with some new stackers and a few new Mini Lops too. I have a friend interested in my Polish, so I will use that money to buy a few Mini Lops and give them a shot!Quite a few changes this year already. A job that helps pay for my rabbit habit, changes in my New Zealand program, the loss of one breed and the gaining of a new one and new cages. lol Also going back to just ONE website! Haha! What changes are you making this year?? Please share!

Sounds like lots of positive changes coming your way. This summer will be my 'test' of how well I handle my bunnies without my 'bunny girl to help. On a more personal level, learning to let my oldest fly (she's off on an exchange program this summer - next year will be college). Going to try my angora program full scale (3-4 litters - likely the largest I will ever get) at the same time. For me, a real test to see whether this is going to be something I can and want to do long term for myself, or whether it was just something for a few years while my kids were into it. Sort of planning to scale back on the ducks and chickens (not going to hatch anymore) ...more later gotta run now... |

Seems to me, lots of change for the "good". Not just with the rabbits either. Keep going! Enjoy this new chapter in your life. Change can be good, but you still have to work at it. And when it's fun, so much easier. DEFINITELY post photos of those mini lops. Got a soft spot for them here as well after actually seeing them at the shows last year. KAZ Oh my change for the year, enjoying the Z-Tribe, hoping to change out cages for stackers, definitely going to a few shows, to make future plans for my Lion head program. My husband really doesn't want to breed Amelia. I think right now he doesn't know what he wants to do. Now with Lilly, which really is a godsend, his focus really isn't there regarding breeding Flemish. Don't care, have two Gentle Giants to enjoy and make sure they have a lovely life here. Yes, good changes! I've been in such a slump for a long time, so I really hope this year is better for me. I've had some set backs (frostbitten ears and the loss of all my litters so far from the cold that won't leave). But I am trying very hard to stay positive and keep on going.Neubunny: I'm not a mom, so I can't say that I know that feeling. lol But I imagine that it's quite an adjustment when kids leave for school (or just for summers) and you can't be there for them all the time. I've seen my mom do it. lol I hope everything works out for you and your daughter who is doing the exchange program, and of course when she goes off to school too. Plus rabbits are way cooler than ducks and chickens anyway. ![]() ZRabbits: Oh, yes... I love to take photos. They will definitely be here! lol I am so excited and I can't wait to get them. Having to take the time to get new cages and sell the other rabbits is pushing it off though. IMPATIENT!! lol I am excited to see how everything with your bunnies works out. I love seeing all your pictures too. Your rabbits are adorable! You know, my first litter of rabbits were Flemish Giants. My doe Morrissey had 13 babies and 11 survived. She was super mom. Flemish are pretty neat!

finishing -- should know better than to get on here before getting everybody ready and off to school. With the ducks and chickens, we really like getting eggs in season, but probably 3 birds would be plenty for our family. lol -- we are getting 10-15 eggs a DAY. We like eggs, but not that much. Do give away a lot at work, but question whether it is worth feeding birds just to give the eggs away. Kids no longer interested in showing them - and with the flock having gotten mixed (the ducks are now Pekin-Swede-Cayuga crosses, the chickens are all standard Wyandottes, but mostly partial lace and spangled thanks to the Columbian-pattern hens that got mixed in with the lace) I'd have to start over to get show birds. lol -- though my husband did look at the Polish pretty seriously at the game bird show and then found hatching eggs in the catalog at home -- I had to remind him that they aren't a breed that will survive our winter without a heated coop -- he should build a heated coop first, then order the eggs. We talked about maybe trying guinea fowl -- I'm a little worried about their tendency to wander (and not sure how happy all the neighbors were with the ones that my next door neighbor had 2 years ago -- we enjoyed them wandering through our place, but not so sure everybody felt the same) -- and Jillian was really the most interested and she won't be here this summer - so tabling that for a year. We also talked about trying raise and release pheasants and quail but the kids weren't excited about that, so we decided to put it off for a year. We did drive up and pick up a peahen (Josh bought it himself with his fair money from last year plus some of what he made selling guinea pigs) - so we may dabble in trying to hatch some peacock eggs this summer. And maybe figure out a way Josh could show them at fair (transport and providing a cage for use at the fairgrounds being the issue there - plus the possibility she is sitting as I think that fair hit smack in breeding season for peacocks). That should be a sufficient 'bird project' for this year. I think we are also winding down on the 'larger animal' projects - at least in terms of what we own. Rhi has lost interest, and Josh was only marginal on those to begin with (he likes the trail class and 'llama limbo', and the costume contest but not the required showmanship and breed class. and knowledge stuff). We have Gabi (our alpaca girl) - who may be pregnant from when the boys broke the fence last fall (Sam's male, Yeti, jumped the fence this weekend - to judge by the way she was spitting at him, I think she's already pregnant) and Rhi's three dwarf goats (none in milk) which will likely stay a long time yet. The neighbor girls have a LOT in our pasture (lol - I found another new goat yesterday - Sam picked up a market goat she's going to raise to sell at fair) and I will just enjoy them (I'm happy to provide the space and help, but not responsible for them). Josh still has his cavies -- waiting on 2 litters (blue tans and blue marten carriers) and he's looking forward to showing those more this year. And he will have a litter of minirexes (due tomorrow - opal x blue otter both self carriers) which fingers crossed will give him a junior buck and doe for fair (he's down to just one breeding age doe, so really fingers crossed). I'm happy for you, Briana! It's hard to make those changes, but I'm sure they'll end up being a lot of fun. ![]() Neubunny, I hope you do end up staying in bunnies, at least a bit. You're also preparing for a lot of changes... hope it works out! Lessening your workload a bit is a good idea - seems like you have a lot on your plate right now. As for me... well, I'm not really planning anything. My dog has been gradually getting worse with her issues and it's now to the point where I can't leave her alone, even for a few minutes. I'm finally to the point where I would really like to get a job or go back to school, but it's just impossible right now. This Summer I'm planning to go see my favorite band in concert... a bit nervous, but there's no way I'll miss this... even if I end up fainting! I think I'm (very slowly) becoming less anxious and depressed, so at least there's that. For the bunnies, I'm also planning on getting a few new cages. I've been trying with no luck. I would like to replace a few solid bottomed cages that I have with wire bottomed ones and maybe have a few extra. I would really like to further my shaded/REW project and see a good improvement in type. So far I've been seeing some improvement from last year, so fingers crossed that it continues.

Hanna - sounds like some pretty big changes for you! lol - French angoras would 'double count' as both an angora AND a heritage breed... happy to send some your way late summer/early fall if all my planned litters take. Jerseys are sweet bunnies too - and at least around here the folks who show are all really nice. Hadn't heard about NPIP certification on birds ... course we don't really show our birds other than at the local youth fair. I have learned that taking on multiple breeds within a species is tricky -- chickens and ducks and both store sperm for over a month, so you need separate pens for each breed (and/or incompatible varieties). Cayugas are a nice heritage breed duck -- we still have one older cayuga hen (and several that are likely cross). A pretty bird for feathers and meat, and a pretty dark silvery eggshell. They don't lay as heavily as my swedes and crosses though. Supposed to be really cold hardy - though I haven't had a problem with any of my ducks with the cold. Good luck! |

Lots of changes...for the good! Good for all of you for really sitting down and making a plan. Hope all stick to it! Scaling down operations are happening everywhere. It is what needs to be done in certain economic levels and changes in family structure (kids go to college, or find a new hobby). It's a ever changing thing. Hanna, see that you are looking to possibly go into Lionheads. Sweet little breed, well I think so. Just like JW's. Just have to find a breeder who breeds not just for conformation and mane, but personality. Look forward to what you decided is your next new breed. Sidd, so sorry to hear about your dog. Understand completely when they get up in age. Good for you for pushing yourself to go to that concert! Baby steps. KAZ |

I think the FA will be perfect for your multi-purpose rabbit project. Definitely a great wool rabbit plus meat as well. I would go with an FA instead of a LH if that was where I was headed as well. Wishing you all the luck! KAZ |

Hanna -- keep an eye on my string for Della's litter (Rainbow litter in the Genetics section) lots of colors there for you to choose from. I will at most be choosing two of these to be my keepers and the rest will need homes. Don't know genders yet (another thing I'm really bad at) but I will post there as I figure them out. -- those are the ones that will be ready first! (9 weeks = July 4th - which is likely the youngest I would let angoras go). Haven't bred my other does yet -- still trying to figure out when and where I can meet with Colleen as she offered I could breed to one of her bucks. |

Oh, I went to the feed store a week or so ago and they had a french angora there for sale. lol I totally thought of you! (NeuBunny) I thought about it for a couple minutes, and then I was like... darn it, my dad would kill me if I came back to the car with this rabbit, and I honestly don't have the room until all my Polish are gone. lol And do I really want all that wool? Haha. He was so cute though. Kind of younger looking. The tag said he was a blue steel. He was a very pretty dark gray for the most part. |
