I'm about 90% sure that Sadie is nesting. She's been digging a lot in her litter box. She's been pushing some of the straw and hay out, and then moving other pieces to the back. It does look like a nest. She's also growling a lot if I just reach into the litter box and she's growling at me. The only problem is that she is trying to make her nest in her litter box. Should I put all the hay back? Or should I wait until she has the babies and then move them out of the litter box? |

personally, I would wait and move them later - so long as the litter box isn't used. If she is determined, she will have them there even it you move the nest.

I agree with Neubunny. Do you have a nest box? If so, maybe you could try to move the nest box where her litter box is and put the nest she made in there. She may just prefer that location. |

The litter box has been used. Yesterday was the last time I cleaned it. I couldn't clean it thoroughly though because I had to be somewhere so I just dumped out the poop and soiled litter (hay). I didn't wipe down the bottom of it to get the dried urine and stuck pieces of hay off the bottom, so it's still dirty. I was gonna finish cleaning it today but she was making a nest so I didn't touch it. Also, when should she have the babies now. This could be the second time she's done this. Two days ago she had kicked out most of the hay out of the litterbox, but I thought it was the wind since it was so windy. This time, I actually saw it. Is it weird that she's nesting in the middle of the day. I thought they usually nest and give birth at night or early morning. It's 2:40 PM where I llive. |

some does 'practice' for a week or more before giving birth. others wait until the last minute. I've had does give birth at all different times of day, but never when I was watching. |

Some of my does start messing around in the litter box/digging at the cage pretty much immediately after breeding. Some gather hay in their mouth a week or so after breeding. It just depends. I have one doe that gathers hay/pulls fur when she's not on a litter (she doesn't appreciate it) then stops after I breed her.

Does, who go through false pregnancies can go through all the motions, meaning building a nest, pulling fur, but no babies. I watch my girls go through the motions of nest building at certain times. Love to dig. But thankfully no fur pulling has occurred. Can say, the girls learned to make some nice nests from their Mom, Luna. Or she passed on some really good instincts to her girls. Only thing to do when a doe starts nesting and you don't know if she's pregnant, is go through the motions yourself. Put in a nest box and just observe. Kits appearing is the only way to really know, unless you really know how to palpate. KAZ |

Yeah. I've had does do this when they didn't take. They just think they did. I've had a few that pulled fur right on time and still weren't pregnant. You'll just have to be patient. |
