Sonny's neuter is scheduled for May 19th and he's going to be a daddy shortly afterwards! I think I'm going to schedule Sadie's spay for that day as well. I'll just let them know that she may be pregnant. Do you think the vet will be able to palpate her and know for 100% sure if she's pregnant? Because if they don't catch it, I don't want them to go through with the spay. It won't be stressful for her as the place I go has a rabbit clinic once a month where they don't allow dogs or cats in the clinic so it's quiet and calm for recovery. Oh and when I said Sonny is going to be a daddy, I mean from the other doe he was bred with. Of course we don't know for sure if she took but Sonny did fall off of her and grunt a little bit and she did look like she lifted so we're hoping for babies. |

Ask the vet how certain they can be based on palpation. Some are very good (yours likely is if they have a special day just for rabbits!). Others may suggest an X-ray first to be certain, or recommend waiting. Neither palpation nor X-ray is going to catch it if she is less than a week pregnant though. But really, why the hurry? It would be easier to be 100% sure by just scheduling her a month after Sonny. |

Make sure you have a rabbit-savy vet who will know about rabbits and how to palpate. And I'm with Neubunny, why in such a hurry to spay/neuter? Doe gestation is not that long and you would know in 40 days whether she really is pregnant or not. Probably want them done together? Easier for bonding as they will be ready (losing hormones) at the same time? KAZ |

I do want them done together for the bonding issue and it's a stress reliever for rabbits to have a bonded mate nearby. Also it makes the recovery time shorter. I'll ask my vet those questions and if she cant be 100% sure, I'll just wait. |

Will be thinking of both on those days. I know you will be a bit nervous and it is a bit nerve wracking bringing buns home after surgery, as I know I was when Dobby and Kreacher went through their neutering. When they went through it, I made sure I had something familiar with them (blanket, stuffie toy). Also I made sure they had some of my food and water with them as well. After surgery, the vets do want to get rabbits eating and drinking to get their guts moving. Having familiar food and water with them, will help 10 fold, as we all know how sensitive the digestive system is to any change. When I got them home, made sure it was quiet for them. Didn't constantly pick up, or handle them. But did talk to them a lot. They did find comfort in my voice and tone. Just let them find their way back to relaxing in their own environment. Give them some space, but do monitor for pain. Teething grinding, hiding, stomach pushing. Also watch the grooming of the areas. I'm sure your Vet will go over all of this with you. Fingers crossed all goes well and it's and easy experience, which it can be. My boys flew through it. Actually the next day, it was like nothing happened. Took their pain meds very well. KAZ |

Monday is Sonny's neuter day. I'm going to a clinic. It's not an office that provides routine vet care, only spays and neuters for dogs, cats, and rabbits. The rabbit savvy vet has done over 4,500 rabbit surgeries. They should give me pain meds right? |

Definitely request pain meds. A bun in pain is a bun that will not eat. Giving a bit of relief for the pain will help your bun start the needed eating and drinking to get his digestive system really going. Some buns bounce right back and the pain relief is not needed, but better safe than sorry. KAZ |

My dad went there with his dog and said they do offer pain meds for five extra dollars so I assume they will offer it with bunnies too. I emailed them to be sure. |

Did you get a reply yet? Sounds like your vet charges for the pain med, which mine did too. Worth the extra fee, to have that pain med on hand. If you don't get an answer, I would definitely call and talk to someone. KAZ |

I did get a reply. With rabbits, they don't charge extra. They told me they don't charge extra because then some owners wouldn't buy it and they don't want the rabbits to stop eating. I'm really happy with this vet. If all goes well, I will be coming here for the baby I keep as well. |

Surgery went well. Sonny is on his way home. He ate after surgery (and drank). They gave us 3 oral syringes of pain meds for him. Hoping he likes the taste! |

So glad to hear Sonny is over the operation and now home. Believe me, my two boys lined up for the pain med because they did like the taste. Was really easy to administer. Some things they do like the taste of. Hoping Sonny does too. Less stressful for everyone. Just give him a good week of rest. Then let him venture out for some exercise. Not too much too fast. Dobby and Kreacher, they were like nothing happened. By the third day, it was like it was all forgotten. But watch out after 5-6 weeks, the hormones do flare up before they go. At least they did for my two who had a big row, which caused the split. KAZ |
