Ants are swarming here. Especially with the heavy rains and snow melt. They are forced to the surface. They will disappear as quick as they appeared. Just keep watch over babies. Make sure the ants don't start biting the kits. And if necessary move the kits. You can always take the nest box in the house and bring kits to Mom twice a day for feeding. And would like to suggest DE sprinkling around their crates. Great stuff, which is all natural and does the job. Insects do not like it. The ticks here, never make it to adult. This stuff penetrates their shells and just dries out the entire innards. Good for dogs too. We plan to DE not only the rabbits this year, but also Lilly. We used to do this with Jake. Never saw any surviving ticks or fleas on him. KAZ |

I have heard of people losing babies to ants... not sure if the kind of ant matters. I would be careful with that. |

Congratulations! Definitely get DE to keep the ants away -- keep on top of them until you do. Depending on the type of ants, ant bites can be deadly to tiny kits. Terro ant traps or boric acid also work well (though that would have to be out of Sadie's reach. If you don't have those on hand immediately, but can see a 'trail' the ants are taking, you can interrupt their path to the kits with something they like better -- like a bit of sugar water. Peanuts aren't always deformed. Often the only difference I see is that their ears are set back a little farther and they are much smaller. You will know in a couple of days - peanuts won't grow at all (and die in less than a week), in contrast a runt will grow -- maybe slower than siblings, or maybe catch up. lol - and don't forget to change Sadie's appointment - you won't be able to get her spayed until after the kits are weaned (6-8 weeks). Thank you. I'll add pictures to another post. Sorry if this is stupid, but what is DE? Where can I get it? Is it safe for Sadie to eat if she somehow is able to (or cats to eat, since I do have outside cats). Where do I put it in the cage? If I put it outside the cage, what do I do about the ants already inside the cage? |

The forum won't let me post for some reason, so I'll attempt at posting photos here. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t31.0-8/1504372_312723298880474_710352979128396411_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/t31.0-8/10273254_312723375547133_5206677126476203659_o.jpg https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t31.0-8/10259010_312723285547142_4599103490023617818_o.jpg https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t31.0-8/1781162_312723372213800_1808005163947357881_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t31.0-8/893725_312723412213796_3760628861920528085_o.jpg Two of the bunnies have pink skin with black, another is a solid color but darker than pink, one is pink with black shadowing on her head (it looks like a faded black mark, but not grey) and one is completely pink. The smaller bunny is in a pic with it's sibling in pic four. The smaller one is on the left. What colors do you think I have? |

The ears on the smaller one look a little bit like triangles, but I would need a better top view to be sure. That's on an angle so I can't tell. With parents being an orange and a VM harlequin (is this correct? Was Sadie VM too?), the babies look like an orange/fawn (dilute orange), a harlequin, a VM orange (?) and the lightest one could be a BEW or REW? Neubunny, is tort possible out of this pairing? |

Sadie was vienna marked as well. I'm hoping the light one is either a BEW or REW. BEW, I'd definatley keep. I was looking closer at one of the babies and I'm thinking the black shadow mark that I mentioned looks something like the marks on a dutch rabbit's head. I'll get another top-view picture of the little guy. Are triangle ears bad? |
