Leia is due on Thursday! I gave her a nest box on Monday, and other than occasional digging she didn't pay much attention to it. Well, last night she decided to have some fun! I came down this morning to find a beautifully made nest in her cage, right NEXT to her nest box. I carefully moved her creation into the nest box, and literally before I could walk away, she was at work removing every.single.piece of hay from the box and back to "her" nesting area. Kind of reminds me of some other does I've had, lol! She's pretty big (I palpated 3+) and I'm hoping for a nice sized litter. It's her first time, so I've got my fingers crossed! |

next time, move the nest into the box and then slide the box over into 'her' spot. |

Thanks for the tip I thought about that - I probably should have, but it would have been inconvenient b/c of the door location and where her crocks are attached. I managed to cover all of the 'danger' areas with BSW and urine guards, and it all *just* fit in place, so it's kind of hard to move stuff around. But I tend to check on due does a lot (even in the middle of the night!) so I'm sure it'll be fine. She's practically swimming in all of the hay in her cage right now. Lol - come to think of it, 9 out of the 12 live kits born here last year were born on the floor, and all of the non-peanuts lived. I guess I just have stubborn does .

yeah, sometimes they do pick an 'impossible' spot where a nest box just can't fit. All you can do then is watch and try to catch them. Glad you've had such good luck with kits 'on the wire'. Unfortunately, we usually have found them 'too late' when that happens. |

I have a couple of solid-bottomed kindling cages that I use for first-time Holland does, but there is just no way that I could fit Leia and the nest box in one of those cages comfortably. So with the kits born on the floor, most were actually born on the solid portion - except for one doe who delivered half of her litter on the solid side, and half on the side with the riser. Fortunately I was able to save them all. No kits yet, but she just went into crazy-nesting mode, so hopefully she's getting closer! |

A few pics... The colored marks on their ears are for ID... I decided to try and keep track of them, so we'll see how that goes! Newborn gender guesses Red - doe Orange - buck Yellow - buck Lt. Green - doe Dk. Green - buck Lt. Blue - buck Dk. Blue - buck Purple - doe Brown - doe |

So thrilled for you! What a beautiful group of kits! Thank you so much for sharing your video. Leia looked like she was really doing a good job. Loved that little kit rolling around. Wanted so bad to put him back with the others she already kindled. That must have been such an amazing experience to watch. Luna was already done, cleaned up and waiting for me when she had her kits. Can't wait to see how they progress. Smart idea with the different color dots. Tough to watch progress with kits that all kind of look the same. Fun part will watch their points come in. KAZ |

cool! thanks for sharing. We've never managed to catch one of ours kindling. I think they wait until we are gone. Even Personality, who was in Jillian's bedroom, just sat facing us (with her backside tight in the back corner of the nestbox) glaring at us until we went out of the room. |
