Get the Duct Tape, Stat!

I found a baby out of the nest box on the complete other side of the cage. He was in the food bowl. I have a gravity food bowl and it looks like mom tried to help him because she pulled out all the pellets around him. He was chilled and completely stiff when I found him. I brought him in. I held him under running warm water, put him in my bra, wrapped him in a dryer towel, wrapped him in hand warmers, held him in a bath of warm water (head out of the water), put him underneath my pants on my legs. He isn't stiff anymore. I thought I saw his back leg twitch but I'm not sure. His toe nails are white.

I don't know what to do. Is he alive? Is he dead? I don't know. Please help me.

I hope you kept trying for a little while. I have saved chilled kits before. I have heard if they're stiff and cold they might be saved, but I'm certainly no expert. I don't think you're supposed to use water though. I put mine next to my body for awhile and then put them in a tupperware with a towel and turned my space heater on bedside it, keeping careful watch on the temperature. I saved them all, but I don't know how long your kit had been cold. Good Luck!

I have heard that if they are cold and "dead", there may be hope. If they are warm and "dead", then they are probably gone. It may take some time, but any time that they are warm and "floppy" then I consider it too late.

I lost him. I buried the little guy in my forest and marked his grave with a stone.

I tried for 2 hours. He was warm and floppy, then warm and completely stiff.

I actually tried for much longer than 2 hours. I think it was more like 4 because I found him at 8 and buried him at 11 AM.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Sounds like you did all you could for the little one.

So sorry for your loss. Losing kits like that is so hard - at the point where they are just becoming more active. I haven't had any luck getting them warmed back up if they aren't still moving - though others on here have. Really sounds like you did everything you could.

Re water -- haven't tried that on kits, but it is often recommended for larger animals as water warms more evenly. For future reference (knock on wood you never need it) better if you put them in a plastic bag (keeping the head out of course) so they don't actually get wet. Not that the water is bad for them, but eventually you have to dry them and evaporation causes major heat loss (potentially chilling them all over again).

I read it online to put them in water. By the time he died, he was completely dry. It didn't take long for his thin fur to dry out.
