I have a young senior holland lop doe named Dusty. I noticed today while posing her that her eyes have some crusties around them? I checked her vent and it is not: red/swollen/scabby etc. I'm deathly afraid of any of my rabbits coming down with vent but I'm trying to rule it out: she has never been at a show nor has her parents or the buck I just mated her to. Before I've noticed this, I have been touching all of my rabbits but they are fine. Dusty has been over at another breeders place, on her table BUT the breeder, a good honest breeder, has disease free stock and would never let me bring her over if she knew her animals where sick. So I'm hoping this might rule it out? I think she's had this for a while now (been so busy with my brand new baby) so IF it was vent, I would think I would see scabs, red/swollen vent etc. I do use Fur bedding for my hollands, again my breeder friend has used this bedding for a long time with no issues but she did say her buns get water eyes etc and loose a little bit of fur around the eyes when the are shedding. I'm wondering if she might be allergic to the bedding perhaps? Here are some pics.. I tried to take a pic of her vent by myself so pic isn't that good lol![]() ![]() ![]() What do you think? Also should mention, she's in great coat, no sniffing, no runny nose nothing, very healthy otherwise. |

It looks more like a very mild conjunctivitis. Mild - as the membranes around the eyelids aren't at all red or swollen. Clean away with a damp tissue or cloth. My guess is that's all it will take to clear it up. Any number of possible causes - most environmental (dust, hay poke, bedding, pollen, stray eyelash, bit of fur in the eye, etc). My daughter has had a couple of Jersey woolies who were/are prone to it every time they molt - sometimes much worse than this. A little ophthalmic gel always cleared even the worst up in a week or so. |

Thanks! I'm happy it is only that, I thought it most likely was but always want to make sure. I'll get her eyes cleaned up today
