This doe was brought to me today. Do you think she is still fertile and able to get pregnant in this state? I was hoping to use her to breed for broken lutino. But now that i've seen her.. NO. I've read a lot of stuff about fat building up around the ovaries of doe's.. considering this, i decided its best to rehome her, since she wouldn't get pregnant anyway. The only pen i have is where my buck is roaming free.. i could put her in there but then i would never know if she is pregnant or not, that would be a problem. What do you think? ![]() ![]() On a better note. Im getting this doe monday. She is picked up in Belgium for me.

Definitely think you would have fertility problems with the first doe. Nice dewlap but can see rolls elsewhere. Would take time to tune her up. Then hope the fat, which definitely built up around her ovaries vanished. Hoping there was no damage to reproduction due to the build up of fat. I'd go with the better note. Lovely doe coming in on Monday. Won't take her long to settle in. First doe, could be trimmed up and sold as a pet? KAZ |

How old? A young doe will likely take even if overweight (most of the fat reserves on young animals are external, not on the internal organs) -- and just put the 'reserves' into a litter. A young animal will also get back into condition much faster when switched to a proper diet. She doesn't seem a good match on type to the other animals in your lutino program? Is she a lutino carrier or have other traits you are trying to get? Since you are space-limited, I would give her a pass if she didn't have something in particular you were aiming for. If she does, then it is worth trying her once (or twice). I'd wait and compare the two side-by-side once you have the second doe and then decide which is better. |

How old is the first doe? Has she had any/many litters? To me, she doesn't really look that chubby... I know that the rex coat makes it more obvious. Could she just have a little dewlap and some extra "skin" from having a couple litters? I suspect that if my Hollands had a rex coat, a couple could be really chunky looking even though they are healthy and produce with ease. That said, it's up to you. If you are getting a similar doe soon and have limited space, sell her and keep the new one that you think you'd have a better chance with. |

I just texted and asked her age.. he answered with 6 years old. IM SHOCKED. I wish i asked before i took her.. Well atleast she is going to have a better life. She was fed mixed rodent feed which made her fat and the lack of excersize. I already mailed the girl who has a at home rabbit shelter. The same story happened years ago when they dropped a fat rabbit here.. i tried to lose its weight but she refused to eat any hay or pellet, and charged at me when i walked in the shed. This lady picked her up and rehomed her together with a buck. So i wish the same thing for this doe as well. There is no point in keeping her and trying to breed.. No im totally going for the slim doe who is 1.5 years old. None of these 2 are lutino carriers but beside the netherland dwarf and improving their type.. we also want to breed them in broken and see how that goes. And since my lutino buck already carries rex.. will the first generation result in solids and brokens with a rex or normal fur. All carrying the lutino gene. Second generation with be broken lutino (with either normal / rex or satin coat). Either netherland dwarf or rex dwarf is compatible with the lutino. We have both pop up. I now have a litter of 3 rex and 1 lutino out of rex and satin who are both sired by my lutino buck. I prefer satin over rex tho.. but the other 3 breeders prefer rex over satin.. so i'll have deal with that. The second doe again

Now that you mention age with 2nd doe, I would ask if she had a litter already? If not, younger doe could be a better pick. Also not only viable, but doesn't litter size diminish as a doe ages? Your choice. Hope you let us know how it goes. KAZ |

The weight of the first doe was already a big enough factor to send her off.. and now i heard that she is old.. im embarrassed that i even considered her as a breeding doe when she is past limits on 2 levels. Its definitely the younger doe who is in great shape, that im getting. Monday she will be bred and hopefully the first broken to carry lutino will born next month.
