Happy dance. Maia has babies in the nestbox! Nicely covered with lots of wool (and she was still pulling more this morning). Chilly so I didn't pull them all out -- possible I miscounted, but I think 9!!! At least one chocolate and one tort -- think I see some whites in there too, but the barn light is awful in the evening and early morning.

Of the 3 current breedings, this is the one I was most hoping for. My second generation! with high odds for the colors I want to specialize in.

Full sibling cross (only because of a death, a promised buck falling through and a miss with my other buck - worried he may have gone sterile thanks to the heavy antibiotics last winter - couldn't wait to locate another buck as Maia is now 15 months old, pushing it for a first litter). Doubles as a test cross - the 'whites' will be either REW (if as should be the case both are REW carriers) or pearl (if either carries chl).

Chocolate tort (aabbC-Ddee) x chocolate (aabbC-DdEe) - so I predicted mostly chocolate tort (my goal) and chocolate with the possibility of lilac, lilac tort, and REW or pearls. Chocolate sable is possible, but if so, likely the same genotype as their grandmother (IF these parents carry sable, they had to get it from her), which just looks chocolate.

I think 2 chocolate, 1 "white" (could be lilac, REW or pearl - can't tell yet) and 6 torts (which should be all chocolate or lilac tort). Hard to be sure with that many wiggly squirmy kits!

Zoe had her litter this morning (which means Vern is NOT sterile - yay!). 4 torts (again, should be all chocolate or lilac) and 1 stillborn chocolate. Silly bunny built her nest next to the box again. In front of the door, which swings in, so NOT easy to get in and rearrange -- I swear she was holding that door shut deliberately to keep me out. Safely in the nestbox now, with mom adding more wool.

Way to go Vern! Congrats to Zoe, the silly girl. Glad to hear all kits are safely in the nestbox.

Temps in the 40s in the mornings here -- and hovering low 50s in the evening. Not doing more than a quick pull back of the wool to check that all kits are alive and fed. Supposed to warm back up on Sunday, so hopefully I can get photos then.

Maia's litter

See 'white' in the upper right. Was hoping the photo would pick it up better, but to me looking at it in person it is getting darker color on the ears (sable point?). Now I'm wondering if I was just seeing shadows in the barn lighting. lol - patience needed.

Zoe's litter

I was wrong - there's a white in this litter too. Thinking that is REW as I've gotten REW from this cross last year.

Congratulations!

lol, blurry kit pics, means really active kits, with both litter. Great news. See the "white" in both, so they are the REW's? Not a "pointed" that you hoped?

Love the dark coloring in Maia's litter. Can't wait to see the one that looks like chocolate in a few weeks.

Again, way to go Vern.

The one in Zoe's litter looks REW to me. I went out and looked again at the white in Maia's litter. I definitely see color on that one (carried it to the barn door for better lighting), which doesn't show in the photo. I think it will end up pearl (in angoras that's aa ee with chd or chl - so includes sable point, but allowed in any color). That means Malakbel IS the source of the 'odd colors' in the earlier litter - making them likely sable chins (shagoutis) rather than true chins. But I need to be patient and wait until the eyes open to be sure of what I think I'm seeing. Not an issue either way ... honestly (given that all the pearls are showable) I'd rather have pearls popping occasionally than REW (not a fan of the pink eyes).

I am such a bad photographer .... here's the best of what I snapped this morning...

Maia's litter has decided to sleep in the front of the cage - they or she dragged all the nesting stuff out themselves (I just tipped the box after the putting them back twice in 30 minutes)

You can see the 'white' baby in the front - probably the best photo I took for seeing the true color...
Tried to pull out the darkest tort, lightest tort (which I think is lilac tort - just the one significantly lighter) and the 'white' - which I'm convinced is pearl (chocolate sable point). Barn lighting wants to add a yellow cast to the whole photo.

And for comparison, I pull the REW out of Zoe's litter and put it next to the pearl.

They are so cute! It will be fun to see their colors come in as they grow up.
