So I have one of Westley's brothers, he is a young seal buck. This buck which I named Lance was always small with very wingy ears etc etc... I ignored him especially because he started out with blue eyes which now turned marbled which are now turning brown. Just got him sold but took him out for another look and he is super nice, really blossomed into a nice buck, has better type than Westley. So my issue is, I don't want to sell him and regret it but I worry about those marbled eyes and that being passed down to my Hollands... but I don't want to pass up on type either... he also has less stray white hairs than his sister Lexus.... I would still be taking the chance of marbled eye color if I bred Westley and Lexus into my lines anyways correct? Just trying to decide if I should cancel the sell and go with type or sell him because of those eyes. I will get pictures up this afternoon after my baby goes down for her nap. I'll get eye color picture and type- one major thing that stands out is his ears, very wingy and may be that way but they are improving as his head grows in, he is small buck.

Ok here are his pictures.. I think in the end I had to really decide if I wanted to breed him with the odd eye color and I decided I just can't do that. I'm still puzzled as to why Silvia, the dam, produces such eye color. She was bred to Luigi and is due next Thursday, should be all torts so I will see if the odd eye color pops up on any of the torts. Not sure yet if Luigi carries anything besides "C" so we shall see!

This is a side profile of him, I love his bone, hate the ears but just have to pass on him

Here the eyes look like a normal brown, the brown is showing up from the inside of the eye outwards

And in this picture you can see the marbled effect I guess you call it, on the outside of the eye- sort of has brown eye color in the middle and dilute eye color on the outside. He was born with blue eyes and they are just now changing, he is 9 weeks old

I find a lot of mine take a while for eye color to settle some not until almost 6 months. I think it may be related to carrying chd/chm/chl - but don't have nearly enough data to say that conclusively. Personally, I don't worry about it at all now if they settle by 4 months (if selling younger than that, I tell sellers it is a gamble whether they will or won't, but honestly all except the ones I think are actually sable-based [chl-] have settled). But I don't typically show tons of juniors, so for me only the final eye color really matters. On the show table, eye color is either DQ or not, no points. Those whose eyes haven't settled (but I think they will) I just don't show as juniors.

Contrariwise, I wouldn't want those ears in a keeper lop - especially a buck (note, I don't actually breed lops, so that's an outsider perception). They might fall a bit more as he ages, but I think he's always going to have more control than he should.

Yes I agree with the wingy ears. His sire had slightly wingy ears (not too bad) but dam does not. I think passing him up even with the good bone is the right choice. The other factor to is, I have two of Palomar's sons, Seastar is pregnant, Sterling got pregnant and Silvia is due next Thursday again (she is going to have another large litter out of Luigi). So I'll have lots of bucks I'm sure to choose from. Hopefully I'll get some nice does to!

Thanks! Things are exploding over here at my rabbitry with does! I just bought a beautiful tort doe, a buck to replace Luigi (selling him) AND I am getting a Luv Lops doe (very nice breeder, known to win a lot at conventions)! Any of you going to be at Portland Nationals?
