The impression I get from reading Robinson is exactly that, that the main silvering gene behaves as semi-dominant when combined with typical modifiers but as recessive when combined with other modifiers. The latter case would then cause problems because the gene could hide for a while and then pop up even without inbreeding, just because it met the right modifiers (or wrong modifiers if you prefer). Silvering modifiers could also be an additional problem all by themselves if (as seems likely to me) some modifiers selected to enhance silvering can act as recessives that cause stray white hairs. However I also get the impression from Robinson that there are really too many interactions going to draw firm conclusions. |
