I'm forever looking at the iris colour of my Hotot ensuring (as much as possible) not to breed from a bunny with eye spots but was wondering what clues to the rabbit's genetic make up iris colour tells us. Any thoughts on this one just as an example?

The one in the photo looks to be a blue-grey eye, which usually means dilute (despite the apparently fairly high rufus in the coat). To other colors... Well, bright blue is a giveaway (Vv or vv). Pink eyes are always either REW (cc) or himi (chch or chc) - or the much rarer lutino (pp). Dilute (dd) gives you the blue-grey rather than brown. Chins (chd) seem to be notorious for having eye color not match the coat -- blue-grey eyes on the chins and/or brown eyes on the dilutes. Ruby cast can be either chocolate (b) or shaded (chl) or once in a while chin (chd). I sometimes can see that even on carriers (e.g., Cchl) especially when young. I also often pinpoint blue versus lilac (when both are possible from the pedigree) based on the eye color -- ruby cast will make a lilac's eyes go more purple. I sometimes have issues in my lines with telling a ruby-cast dark grey apart from brown. And I get the occassional green or gold eyes in my chocolate-based sables and chocolate pearls (chl). I suspect that the chocolate torts that have bright blue-green eyes as kits (which so far settle to chocolate as adults) are my chl carriers. |

Thanks for the great answer NeuBunny and making the effort to post. Much appreciated. I figured this eye was dilute but I'm just really fascinated at the moment with eye colour in my herd and will ms,e an effort to put some pictures up and what I know. I've seen that ruby glow in one or two, but not all, of my chinchillas. |

lol - not at all familiar enough with the effects of lutino itself (other than that it does have it's own effect on eye color) to sort out anything additional. |

NeuBunny I see so many different eye colours and shades and wonder what it might tell us. Fascinating really. I guess it would help if I knew the genotype for the bunnies in the first place and then look for patterns. I'll see if I can get a few more. |
