Hi all, haven't been here for awhile. I was wondering if anyone had any pics of a steel in french angora. The wool is messing me up! |

I'm afraid not, and the the usually excellent rabbitcolors has nothing for steeled angora. I assume you're trying to distinguish steel from plain agouti? In a normal furred rabbit I'd suggest paying most attention to the belly, but if the wool is making that unclear it may help to pay more attention to the eye circles and lacing, where the fur may be more of a normal length and so more of a normal colour too. |

Thanks TWR, I'm finding no pics either. What is happening is a friend of mine bred two self blues together (so she thought) and got agoutis in the litter, also sallander (pearl), an off color blue, and 3 regular self looking blues. We figured the mom was actually an agouti steel Es with an e. I've read that this can show up looking self. Now we find that when both the doe and buck shed out the wool, they both seem to have some ticking, so I'm guessing that they are both Ese? If so, then the other blues in the litter would have to be steel also? |

Also, even on the face (with short hair) you can't see any eye circles on the buck or doe (can't tell with the belly, it's still pretty blue but the wool is confusing) |

I've seen an awesome steel (black with silver tips) French angora on the showtable, but unfortunately didn't get a picture. there is a picture of a blue steel English angora here ... http://www.bumblebeeacres.com/EnglishAngoraRainbowofColors.htm you might note even side-by-side with a blue you can barely see the ticking - just looks 'off color'. If dealing with Ese - steel seems to be extremely variable. Some have no ticking, some have just a bit, some are fully ticked. And some weirdly are reported to have the agouti-type belly come back. You might try the rabbit color genetics facebook group -- a lot of angora people on that group and someone might have a photo to share. Do you have pedigrees on either parent? |
