My sister is just starting out showing rabbits and I am trying to help her figure some things out. The last few shows we had help doing entries and finding our way around and those were for a different breed of rabbit, we have only been to 3 shows total. All the shows we go to do not have a sanction for Rex, but I've read we can still show them. How does this work exactly? Do they still compete against the other breeds for show BIS? Sorry if my questions sound silly, but yeah, total newb here. Has anyone shown at a state fair before? How different are they from regular shows? We will be going to the state fair of Texas to show her rabbits. Thanks for any help. Edited by purplebunny, Sep 1 2011, 12:30 AM.

Since the Rex is a recognized breed by the ARBA, yes it will be allowed to compete in the open show for the Best 4-class and BIS awards. Fairs normally require animals to be displayed for an extended period of time in coops provided by the fair association. It's a source of concern for many breeders, as they are subject to being toyed with by fair visitors. They're also potentially around other rabbits which carry illnesses, and that can be transmitted to your rabbits. It's a shame, but standard Rex numbers today are nowhere near what they were 30 years ago. Their exhibitor totals have been impacted by the apperance of Mini-Rex over the years. |

Here is the way sanctioning works: First, you have to have a show sanctioned by ARBA in order to earn a Leg (let us know if you need any clarification on what a leg is). As long as there is an ARBA sanction for the show, which it usually is if it's run by a club, you can show your rabbit, and earn legs toward GCing your rabbit. I know around here it's the more popular breeds that are ten sanctioned, with a few people paying for it themselves. The breed sanctions only apply to you if you're a member of the national club. I don't think you are, so don't worry if they're not sanctioned. It just means that you get points for sweepstakes (that's a whole separate part of showing, lol). It doesn't even have to be sanctioned to show your rabbits. Typically county fairs are not sanctioned. All you need is a judge (not sure if it has to be an ARBA licensed judge, I would think not, but ours is), and people to show rabbits. I hope that explained a few things about sanctioning, I was confused about that when I first started, I thought that meant I couldn't show when it wasn't. I have been to the state fair, but idk how different mine is from yours. We do have another breeder on the forum from Texas, but I'm not sure if she's shown in the state fair. |
