Yup.. Harlies type is all over the place, growth tends to suck, poor immune systems, etc. in my experience so far. There are ethical issues with some of the breeders in selling sick animals to unsuspecting newbies, medicating and showing rabbits that they know have exhibited illness. Cheating is a new one for me, but hey it doesn't surprise me at this point! I think you guys did great to get into Beverens- save your sanity while you can! ![]() Lauren |

Just because your farm name Lauren, and I know some of us had asked about harlies, or elops from you before... I am curious if the selling known sick rabbits to you if we're discussing the same people. We went to a few shows down south a friend and I. I stayed in TN to show with andrea, above, and my friends went on down to AL to show in some triples down there. My friend said the other harlies were all just sitting there blowing snot everywhere and no one cared in the least. Ugg it just makes me sick |

Without naming names, its probably the same people. Very disappointing experience to say the least. There really are some ethical issues with showing/breeding/selling sick rabbits.. and cheating (!), but oh well. I know I already said this, but I really do think you guys made a great decision to get into Bevs rather than beat your head against the wall. I know some people will frown on this, but I am planning to introduce NZR genetics to my Harlies here to see if I can improve on their problems. If that doesn't work I might be joining you later on. ![]() Best of luck with your new beauties! Lauren |

That was what I had wanted to try, was some crossing with them and I just gave up. I do wish you the best of luck. And perhaps sometime you'll join us with the bevs =p |

You don't really need to bathe them to get the pee stains off. A few days of working corn starch into and out of their fur will normally do the trick. |

I won't use cornstarch on a rabbit to remove stains anymore it actually dries the fur out pretty bad and no matter how much I try to work it out of the fur they always feel gross for a few weeks after. I found misting them with diluted vanodine works really really well. (It even got blood stains off a white rabbbit.) |

I found the last buck that I got covered in pee that bathing him with dawn dishsoap broke up the stains. With the longer hair on these guys I don't want to use something that's going to dry up hair. Just to break it up, maybe trim the hair and let them finish blowing their coats Where the feed has changed, environment has changed, and water these guys are MAJORLY blowing coats. I thought it snowed when I went out there yesterday =( |

I'm pretty sure we're all referring to the same people with the Harlies. I'll admit that I've had one heck of a time dealing with the snot, but I have tried to cull it out as hard as possible, but there is the chance that one slipped out without me knowing. Oh well. I, too, wanted to try some crossbreeding, but I just don't have the space for it. I love the breed immensely and the challenge of getting nice ones that comes along with them, but I can't deal with the snot any more. It's absolutely heartbreaking to watch these beautiful kits grow up only to start snotting and end up having to be culled because of it. When I went to pick up my Beverens from Kim Calloway, I spent over 2 hours in his barn of 300 Bevs. During that entire time I was there, I didn't hear a single sneeze. And I assure you I was listening very closely. That was very reassuring for me, as I was investing more than I like to admit in these rabbits. However! I'm so very glad that I did. I haven't been so happy being around my rabbits in probably years now. They are so much fun, they'll sit there and play with me, they love attention, they love goofing off. I don't think I've ever had a Harlie like that, and probably not of any other breed either. I love them to pieces and really think that these are the rabbits for me. Now if only I would have saved myself the headaches and jumped on them when I first fell in love with them six years ago! LOL |
