Should be getting some new animals today! Neighbors who board with us found free llamas/alpacas (older gentleman who recently lost his wife - they were hers and he's giving away to 4H kids) - they went out and looked at them yesterday and are going back today to pick them up. Suggested we drive down today too as he also has peacocks he's looking to give away (apparently complete with pens and everything). I had promised Rhi she could get a pair of peachicks in the spring - but this may work out even better.

Awesome! I have always wanted a Llama or Alpaca. I was actually going to get one awhile back to keep the pony company, but we went with a goat.

Jessie - so far I like the goats better. The llamas and alpacas took hours to catch at the farm to load and bring home. These animals all belonged to an older lady and were at one point trained to pull a cart and everything. But since she died, its apparently been all her husband could do to keep them all cared for - so they haven't been worked with in quite a while.

Here they are...

Females - 1 llama (farthest back) and 3 alpacas -- if we can get it retamed enough for her to work with, one of the red alpacas will be Rhi's for fair. All the rest of this crew belong to the neighbor girls.

Males - 1 llama (farthest back) and 1 warilla (that's a hybrid llama-alpaca) - oh and a Nubian wether on the right

They are holding 4 peacocks for us (2 pair) - pending us figuring out an enclosure for them (or coming up with the couple hundred dollars they want for theirs and a way to transport it -- made of 10x6 chainlink panels).

Also considering emus - lol Rhi and John (husband) liked those a lot!

Different species = different amount of chromosomes which means even if they try there won't be any offspring.

But some must have the same number of chromosomes. I live 3KM from a zoo, where they used to keep their Zebra's and Donkey's together, and they now have an adult they call a "Zonkey" It's body is like a donkey, but it has zebra stripes on it

Peacocks are great. The lady who started me in rabbits has them running all over her place. She says they are great for bug control.

OK - got the name wrong (trying to spell phonetically). Huarizo is the result of a cross bretween a male llama and a female alpaca. Usually sterile, but not always. Apparently frequently deliberately bred to create a large animal with the superior fleece of the alpaca. But the gentleman we got this one from called him an 'oops' (resulting from their male llama 'escaping' into the alpaca pen).

especially given that llamas/alpacas have a nearly 12 month gestation and nurse for 6 months (usually singles) - an oops ties up valuable breeding stock for a very long time.
