Came into the barn to do water yesterday morning to find three bunnies loose! I suspect my daughter (who was in charge of night watering and finished after her older sister finished food) didn't clip the bungee cords (the two cages are the two that the latches are a bit loose and have bungees to reinforce).

Spotted Victor (FA buck) first -- he was easy to catch as he was staring at something under the workbench. Something turned out to be the other two - Black Magic (JW doe) and Itari (her almost 7 week old kit). Itari was easy to grab, Black Magic not so much. Normally friendly doe was in a foul mood lunging and biting when we tried to grab her. Guess she didn't enjoy spending the night evading Victor.

Just in case, going to clean out the spare cage and wean Itari tomorrow - also figure out whether that one is a doe or buck. And then mark the calendar to give a nestbox to Black Magic 'just in case' we may have hybrid babies. (Victor's been bred to FA does 6 times with nothing to show for it - but it would figure that this one would take!)

If Itari is a doe, do I need to worry that a 7 week old may be pregnant?

At 7 weeks, I seriously doubt you need to worry about it.

Sorry that happened. :( Scary stuff, I hope your doe is okay.

I agree.. I don't think a 7 week old can get pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd say - remember the date JUST in case. I've heard stories...

Scary, Bumper. :(

You said that she's bigger in size and a singleton, so maybe she's a bit more mature so it would probably be best to keep an eye on her. Just a thought.

calendar marked. 7 week old is a doe. yes, she's bigger (singleton). She was tucked in tight under a cage -- if she spent the whole time 'out' there, then I don't think Victor could have gotten to her. But will be watching.

Gotta get new latches on those two cages. Everyone was in this morning (and Itari moved to a new cage by herself) -- but Victor had his latch undone (just the extra bungee holding it shut) and Black Magic's cage was latched, but she had bitten through the bungee on hers.

I really wouldn't expect anything, but it never hurts to be prepared, you know.

Can't cavies breed at like 4 weeks?

I've heard some weird stories too, and honestly? I wound't be surprised if that 7 week old had one. The reproductive system can be unpredictable.

cavies -- males need to be weaned and separated from moms/sisters at 6 weeks. 4 weeks is too young to wean!

From 6 weeks to 8 weeks they should be living with other cavies (either an older male or in a separate cage within sight of mom) -- otherwise they never learn proper cavy language, eating and social skills. Actually, a lot of people believe that cavies should always have another cavy to talk to -- I tend to agree given how much time our little herd spends chatting through the bars.

But by 12 weeks the males are fully sexually mature. Unless you are really lucky (we kept our first trio together in one large cage -- but one was a fixed male and one of the intact males was WAY larger than the other) the males start fighting for dominance and have to be separated.

started as a bunny question (mine) but I didn't mind it veering into cavies.
