So how exactly does everyone here cull? I would like to first give a rabbit with unshowable qualities to become a pet first and then if i have to put it down, but I HATE it because I live way far out in the middle of nowhere in a county with no large cities and even when i'm willing to meet someone half way they don't want to drive for a rabbit or they dont want to pay $5, they want one for free and then i can't find them a home and end up having to put all pet quality rabbits i get down. Theres got to be a better way, I undestand that not all of them can go to loving homes but I don't feel like putting every single one down. |

Spring babies seem easiest to find homes for -- maybe just because people are looking for outdoor pet/projects? Anyway, we've had best luck at animal swap meets -- usually you have to pay $5 to sell there - but the $ generally go to a sponsor - we hit several last year that were sponsored by local 4H clubs (mostly to sell the ducks, but my daughter sold her 'unshowable' bunnies too). We've also had fair luck selling even the unshowable colors at ARBA shows -- usually there are a few folks wandering (friends, family, interested bystanders) who are really looking for 'just a pet'. We always make very clear in those cases that we don't believe the rabbit can be shown (or won't show well as the case may be). My oldest (and the one who wanted rabbits in the first place) is a vegetarian and horrified by the very concept of putting a healthy animal down -- even for meat. Which is the main reason we keep our breeding extremely limited (just a few litters per year) and work hard at the genetics to avoid producing unshowable colors. I'm still trying to get her to let me cull this years crop of roosters (why on earth am I feeding a dozen roosters through the winter! - because she feels much more strongly about keeping them than I do about sending them to the butcher -- even through I know that in a couple months they will be fighting and HAVE to go anyway). The only one she (reluctantly) agreed had to go is the one (one of the older three) that was attacking people last summer. Edited by NeuBunny, Jan 7 2013, 10:20 PM.

When I raised rabbits my culls went to pet homes or the local meat buyer, but occasionally I had a few left over. If I was actively raising them now, I would be butchering them and eating them or feed them to my dogs. This way nothing is wasted and I don't have to wait for someone to buy them.

I give them 2 months to sell, if they don't sell, I use a 22 and shoot them in the head. Super quick, and I enjoy the adrenaline rush of shooting the gun so I don't mind culling at all. I've made dinner out of one that was big enough, and the rest are just good snacks for my dog |

I keep them all until they are rehomed. I would get no pleasure from killing any animal. If I make the decision to breed them, then I must be responsible for them. |

I only put down super mean or sick rabbits. Everything else I hold on to till I can rehome it. The last couple of years I've not had trouble selling my culls. |

sell them as pets, put them as raw animal food (sell frozen and dead). develop a relationship with the local pet store if you raise something small and fancy. |
