I am really impressed with the chinchilla Dutch in the USA and set out to develop my own. I got a 'good hiding' from the British Rabbit Council' who made their feelings clear. It's not recognised so don't do it. This made me think who I breed my rabbits for and why. I do it for me. I enjoy it. Needless to say I no longer have BRC membership but I do have some wonderful chinchilla Dutch which are in huge demand! Either I'm an iconoclast or a naughty boy.....maybe both.....so who makes up the rules and what right do they have? |

Good for you! I agree.. I breed for myself, so I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can and what I cannot do.

I think as long as you know a fair deal about genetics and are honest and educational to the breeders you sell the bunnies to (so they know what they can and cannot breed the colors to, in order not to mess up genetics) there's no harm in it. Projects are fun and interesting.. if it's something you enjoy and you do it properly, I think it's a good thing. After all, color varieties have to get accepted somehow, and that's not by "banning" people from breeding them. At least here, not sure how the BRC works. |

I totally agree with you. I am fascinated by genetics and that's the real driving force. I'm conscious how easily I could get into a genetic mess and will avoid that at all cost. |

Yup - totally agree. If it is what you want, do it. Just be honest with anyone you sell to. One of my frustrations with registries and organizations generally -- they seem too determined to preserve the status quo. Standards and guidelines are important to keep people working together and do play a role in preserving biodiversity (by recognizing rare varieties and helping to separate defined gene pools which preserve them) but often are to the detriment of incorporating the novel and unique. -- I love the open registry we (ARBA) have with rabbits -- totally hate the closed registries I run into with other livestock (goats and alpacas) -- where you can't even show an animal if it isn't registered and if it isn't from registered parents, it (and its descendants forever) can never become registered -- even if it is the most beautiful perfect animal ever (not that I have any of those - lol - it still seems wrong). |

Sometimes I wonder if the registry issue is protecting someone's income! I bought a pedigree Persian cat. You can pay half price to the breeder to have it registered as pet or show neuter or the full whack for an active animal......which I did. Great. I want to breed from her but not one single breeder will provide the stud cat. So, I can go it alone and put her to a perfect sire who isn't registered and nor will the youngsters ever be. It's a bit if a game i reckon. In the Netherland dwarf there are so many colours now it's gone crazy! I'll breed for the standard type and then go with the colour providing I think it has a purpose. |
