Yet again the USA is streets a head in developing some amazing rabbits. Their dwarf Hotots are exceptional plus there seems to be an abundance of breeders willing to sell stock. In the UK I've not seen any other than the Hotot de Blanc full size and those that breed them appear to keep them to themselves or an exceptionally narrow group of people. I finally got hold of a large buck and put it to a superb Netherland dwarf doe. Several generations on now I have tiny hotots but the ears are still too long.....anyone have any thoughts please? Thank you. |

Don't do either breed myself, but will add my 2 cents... Probably going to need to breed in a great netherland with tiny ears and go through another round of breeding and culling to get the ears right. Otherwise, I think you are on the right track. Good luck! |

Thank you NeuBunny. I've got a very nice ND buck, in my mind perfect in every way.....except it's blue! So, as the hotots are BB DD I'm going to take a go at it and rely on the recessive gene. Phew..... It took an age just to get this far. |

I think there are folks working on the blues here -- maybe you can get ahead of us and get both colors going at once! |

Blue, black, chocolate, and lilac are all fine colours to add to Dwarf Hotot's. Definitely breed to chunky rabbits with short ears, big heads, and good bone. Even though you've come so far on breeding them, you're still not much farther than pet/brood stock, and will need to really cull hard for getting some superb-typed quality DHs |

Thank you. I'm pleased with the degree of eye liner and its depth and quality of colour. The stock I have now are all home bred and have no mismarked spots anywhere which is fantastic. I've seen tiny black spots on previous youngsters, usually hidden behind the ears. Also.....I'm fairly certain some spots develop with age which isn't so good. |

I started this topic years back when I first started to develop my line of dwarf Hotot inspired by the truly amazing USA version of the breed. Here in the UK I never saw anything of the USA type and so I set out on the long road. I'm certain they are here, but not being released to those outside the clique. The vast majority of Hotot sold as dwarfs I believe are just small rabbits and in my experience do not carry the dwarf gene. The animals I had weren't too bad size wise but the ears were too big and head too rangy. I loved their temperament, they had great coats plus I could guarantee almost 100% well marked youngsters. To cut a long story, I mated an outstanding black ND buck to several does. Youngsters looked promising and I got the dwarf gene in the line but the ears caused me grief. Too long. I tried another excellent ND buck and then an outstanding chocolate buck, two years on and many kits later the ears were still an issue. At least the type was forming. I then decided to have a long hard think. Yes Dwarf Hotots are my love. I kept looking at the photos of USA animals. I decided to be unconventional. To take a big step backwards. I put a tiny, tiny beautiful chinchilla buck to a Hotot doe. She had four kits. They were tiny, cobby, a bit over marked with small ears (first cross are bound to be over marked) with a wonderful temperament. I was ecstatic. One issue though. The eye bands were chinchilla. As I type this, one of these kits, now a tiny adult doe, has a single kit in the nest, I can see it's a perfectly marked Hotot. Could it really be finally happening? Those ears always start promising don't they? ![]() |

Thanks both. I agree but you know rabbits. Just as you think you're nearly there, something else comes along. I think the lesson for me here is to think outside the box when sorting out a problem. Putting a chinchilla to my Hotot is totally not desirable and no doubt I'm going to cause issues down the line. Mind you, the fact t that this one has chinchilla bands tells me a lot about the mother Hotot's line. |
