It would shave 20 years off the project to just get pair from some of the breeders already working on them. They're not quite up to par with otters (but then again, few colors are), but they're pretty flashy little things. You'd be fighting size, head shape, ear length, coat type, color problems (they don't simply just make tan, even a couple gens in), length of body, HQ issues, length of bone. A tan is basically the exact opposite of an ND in everything you look for. I highly recommend Kathy Fish (Pacific Rabbitry). |

Thank you, I'll take a look. I agree with what you've said. Here's the issue. There are tans on ND in the uk but breeders are in a closed network.....they won't let me have them! I had this issue with the dwarf Hotot and ended up bringing some large stock back from France. I've got the size down and a fairly nice head but ears way too long! I don't have 20 years.......

I totally agree with megan. My friend was attempting tan hollands and when she bred her F1 it came out like a fat tan. The tans have been the way they are for many years and breeding the racy type and triangle head out of them could take years. |

Oh dear....my fears too.....but what can I do if breeders don't release them? I bet they cull!

just to clarify ... cull does not equal kill. cull means 'remove from the breeding population'. Every animal that is fixed is culled. Just a personal pet peeve. |

Thank you. I would try to find a breeder in the states and try to see how they got started. They most likely bought them but the more breeders you talk to the more chances you'll find a breeder who helped in the process or knows who started the project. Try searching the arba site or the netherland dwarf club website |

I think you would be better to start with an otter in ND or another breed that looks similar in type to the ND. Just a feeling that it will be easier to shift the color (which is relatively few genes) than the type. Cross in high rufus (high rufus otters, reds, oranges) to intensify the color. Select for the heaviest and richest marking colors. The hardest part will be getting the phaeomelanin markings to extend upward -- which I believe is due to the action of modifiers acting on the tan pattern allele. But modifiers for 'more phaeomelanin' are generally dominant over those for 'less phaeomelanin' so steady selection for more markings and crossing in animals with phaeomelanin in different locations (e.g., rabbit A has a huge triangle, rabbit B has orange on feet, rabbit C has more orange on the sides, etc) should progress towards the pattern markings of the tans. ... but that's still a very long-term project. |

I talked to a judge today and he explained a way that seems very logical. He said to find a tan that is short bodied and heavy in bone or most similar to a dwarf body type. Then to cross that with a bunch of self does. Maybe even switch to self bucks and tans does. He said after that only cross the offspring that have the most desirable traits. He said the tan should only be used for the F1 if done correctly I personally wouldnt start with an otter or any white bellied dwarf. That kind of defeats the whole purpose. He also said that using selfs is best because the tan pattern is dominant over self Edited by whoalookitsme, Feb 17 2013, 12:13 AM.
