When Jillian went to feed tonight, she found four frozen kits in Personality's cage. Personality is a black otter and pretty much identical (except for ear number) to her daughter Serenity -- which is the one that should be bred (currently in Jillian's room). Had no idea Personality was pregnant, so of course she didn't even have a nestbox poor baby.

Now, I'm horrible at palpating -- but I was SURE Serenity was pregnant. First time I've ever been sure. And she was way above weight at the show two weeks ago. Absolutely sure that Serenity is the one in Jillian's room now (checked ear number) and that she was the one at the show (had to check ear number for that). Less positive that she is the one I palpated two days before the show -- didn't think to check ear numbers and everybody got rearranged going into carriers and touching up tattoos and again coming home. Personality didn't go to the show and didn't get any touchups to her tattoo. But she did get moved in the rearranging - younger daughter pulled her at one point thinking she was among those who should be going to the show. Feeling Serenity now, in Jillian's room I STILL think she feels very round and solid - with fur parted around the nipples -- afraid to palpate too hard this late. It's wait and see.

'Personality' had been in the large 'nursery' cage since last fall (lost a litter of three -- think the first kit was stuck). There are no bucks anywhere near that top level cage. She hadn't gotten out that I know of. 'Serenity' was living in the smaller cage above Cooro. The day Jillian bred them, she pulled the doe and stuck her in the buck's cage. She's sure of the cages, but not sure she checked the ear numbers. Which has me seriously questioning which doe lost the litter last fall? Could they have been mixed up already then? If that was Serenity, she would have been a 7 month old first time mom - in a weird way losing that litter makes more sense if she was the doe. Jillian did her own breeding that fall round too.

:bonk:

Lesson learned (the hard way again) CHECK EAR NUMBERS!

Oh dang, that's a doozie. :(

I suggest using cage tags. I made some for my rabbits.. I don't need them, but they come in handy for checking due dates and age. I think the tags would prevent that from happening again.

We had cage tags - but getting back from a show late after a long day, the kids are apt to just put everybody back in whatever cage quickly. They were mixed up more often that they were right, so they are just sitting in a box in the barn. Hadn't ever been a problem before because the kids tended to have no two colors alike (lol). But now that Jillian is getting more focused/specialized (and breeding rather than just showing bunnies she bought), we have three black otter JW does and 1 black otter JW buck that all look a lot alike. Probably should get tags back on at least their cages. But given that the problem happened because she assumed 'the one in that cage is Serenity' I don't think cage tags would have helped. They ARE all tattoo'ed though -- and checking tattoos needs to be added to our important steps every time we groom (so they get touched up before they start to fade) and before breeding.

I really do think the two (Personality and Serenity) had likely been 'mixed up' since the previous show that they both went to -- which would have been before the fall breeding too.
