So I started raising Chinchilla mini rex but I can't seem to get good type on my homeraised babies, however one of my does which has really nice type has a litter about to be weaned and I'm not all that familiar with silver martens but could i get black silver martens from crossing my chinchilla doe with my GC black otter mini rex buck?
Also how can you tell the difference between silver martens and otters cause I can't

A marten will have a silver/white-ish triangle behind the head. An otter will have an orange/tan triangle. :)

and yes -- crossing chin and otter is how you get silver martens. Note that the cross will throw mostly castor though (especially if the parents are both purebred for color)...

AAchdchd (chin) x atatCC (black otter) => AatCchd (all castor)

... you only get silver martens if the chin is a carrier for otter or self AND the otter is carrying a 'recessive c gene)...

A(at/a)chdchd (chin) x atatC(chd/ch/c) (black otter) =>

25% AatCchd = castor
25% at(at/a)chd(chd/ch/c) = silver marten
25% Aatchd(chd/ch/c) = chin
25% at(at/a)Cchd = black otter

so usually you have to take the castor F1 back to the chin (when the goal is to improve chin)

In minirex, black and black otter are the 'safest' to cross in to improve type on chins.
Just be sure the otter isn't carrying shaded (which will cause your lines to start throwing shagoutis) or blue (blue-chin isn't accepted in minirex).

Curious? Are you having problems with shoulders? My daughter has a chin doe who to me looks horrible (long and with poor shoulders) yet she always does fair on the showtable (not that there is a lot of competition in youth chin MR) because it seems like all the chin MR here have shoulders just as bad. And my son has a broken chin doe who, while not as bad, isn't going to win anything on shoulders either.

Thank you thank you! im so releived. i didnt wanna cross otter to chin and just get a bunch of culls cause the color is not showable. Castors aren't my favorite but i think i can raise a few. And about the long shoulders... I have a 6 week old chin baby and neither of his parents have bad shoulders but he does which is a bit odd cause im not sure where it came from. Everything else on him is great. hes very deep and has a big bucky head and short ears but def has long shoulders.
