So our regional champ group will be hosting the national show next year. We are REALLY trying to encourage more youth to join and make it so the youth who are in the federation, are actually proud to be in it. So with that we are despretly trying to find ideas of stuff to do at the national show for the youth to compete in or just stuff for the youth in general. Remember there are maybe if we add some 15 youth in the total federation. We if lucky will have like 5-10 show up for nationals............ Sooo any ideas of stuff to do with youth would be super appreciated! What does some of your clubs do? |

I'm not exactly sure how this show works, but here are a few ideas off the top of my head. Rabbit judging contest. Set up a couple rabbits of the same breed and class. Have a judge(s) look over the rabbits and place them 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Then have the youth come and judge the rabbits. Whichever youth (there might be multiple) wins gets a prize. Outfit contest. Pick a theme and send it out before the show. The youth get to dress their rabbits up according to the theme. Have 3 judges choose the top 3 best outfits and give out prizes. Logo design contest. Have the youth design logos for the show (it doesn't have to be official, it can just be for your group). Whoever has the best, wins and gets it published on your website or something like that. Announce the winner at the show so that the youth have to come and see if they won. This is just something I've seen done in 4-H, it's a super big hit and gets the youth really involved. http://www.ca4h.org/files/158809.pdf (Description at the way bottom of the page.) Breed presentations. Have the youth put together boards with the standard of a breed of rabbit. Then set up 3 rabbits of that breed and have other youth judge them 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You could do multiple boards. Again, give out a prize to the youth with the best answers. Crazy hair day. Pick a day of the show when all the youth are to do their hair as crazy as they can. Give prizes to the top 3 craziest hairdos. Breed pride. Have all the youth dress up to represent their breed. Example: Holland Lop. Rabbit hat with short, lop ears. Holland Lop t-shirt. Pants with lop rabbits on them. Fake cotton tail. Rabbit slippers. Whoever does the best job representing their breed, wins. Hope these help. |

don't forget hopping! We added rabbit agility to our youth fair two years ago -- it really draws in a crowd to watch (and some of those kids decide to do rabbits the next year). We offer it as a 'fun' class (no prizes) but it is still really popular. other fun stuff (we do these as practice for our quiz bowl teams, but could work in a bigger context) -- bunny bingo (breeds/varieties or vocabulary in the squares), jeopardy, etc. more serious contests ... showmanship, breed ID, skillathon (hands on verbal quiz), educational posters, bunny photos/art, angora fiber products. |

I agree with these suggestions. Youth members LOVE contests like showmanship, breed ID, skill-a-thons, hopping. When I showed in youth I would be 10x more likely to go to a show that had these contests over one that didn't. Also, hold a workshop or clinic about how to excel in these contests. Simply have a judge or well known youth leader give a presentation. That will draw kids for sure. |
