We are using the above for our rabbits to help promote health and help a strong immune system. My kits have been getting wheat grass from when they were young, then flax seed at 4 months so hopefully it has been a benefit to all the Tribe. I have had no outbreaks, no illnesses, TOUCH WOOD, but also we don't expose them as much as others would, ie showing. But we have put them in stressful situations, ie new environment, outside, meeting children, etc. They all handled it very well. No problems.

I would rather help promote a healthy immune system with nutrition than giving a shot that is not fully tested. Just thought I would put this out for all to read. Maybe it will help your rabbits. I know it's helped mine.

eta: changed when actually wheat grass and flax seed were administered to my kits. Just checked their files so want to be totally honest with all so that maybe it can help others.

Benefit of Wheat Grass for the Z-Tribe:

Helped Neville eat while going through his illness. Plus after eating their wheat grass, all my rabbits go for their hay. Which in my mind, promotes good healthy teeth and also gut movement which all rabbits need. This helps me deal with wool block plus blockages coming from grooming while molting. It's just not wool that blocks rabbits.

The flaxseed has been administered to the Z-Tribe for about 4 months now. Along with sunflower seeds and rolled organic oats. My kits did get wheat grass early in life, but did not get the flax, sunflower seeds and oats until 4 months old. Just wanted to clarify so that all know what I do for my rabbits.

I haven't seen flax seed around here, where do you usually purchase them? What are the reasons for using it? :)

I know down here, it can be bought at Southern States Farm Supply. A 50lb bag which will feed a lot of rabbits is $30. Actually, there's a good chance of it going rancid before it can all be used. It may also be available in health food stores at a higher price for smaller amounts.

I do go to a health store and I guess I'm lucky because it's not as expensive as some might think. The packaging is what really costs. This health store buys in bulk and it MOVES so nothing will go rancid. Very good health food store. Been around for 30 years.

Also buy our old fashioned oats, sunflower seeds, banana slices (freeze dried).

Flax seeds as I posted the info above, is very good for the immune system.

BTW, our Vitamin Store took a page from our rabbits, and now supplies Wheat Grass in powdered form. MANY different varieties. I had no idea there were that many types of wheat grass. Owner checked out what we were saying and wheat grass is not only good for bunnies immune system, but excellent for humans.

I'd be interested in learning about the different types of seeds which have benefits re health. We used to feed the horses boiled linseed to help them put on cost condition but never tried it on rabbits. I like using the black sun flower seeds.

Don't know about linseeds with rabbits, but I do feed my Z-Tribe sun flower seeds in the winter. It is a little fattening but we keep a very close eye on weight here. Flax seed is excellent for their immune system.

And can't say enough about Wheat grass. Best Probiotics I ever found. Definitely gets my rabbits eating. And when the two were sick (knock on wood only two sick rabbits in the past) what a benefit it was to those two to get them to continually eat and be able to keep their gut and strength going as they fought off the illness. The trace minerals are, I can't say enough.

Is wheat grass the same thing as.....I used to keep canaries and I'd sow wheat seeds and let the seedlings grow to about 4 inches long then feed to the birds? If it is, I'll get sowing again.

Yep that is it. Little animals need consistent supply of trace minerals. They use it up like we use Vitamin C.

I had two sick rabbits that giving them the wheat grass helped them continue eating. The MOST important aspect of a rabbit. They NEED to eat constantly to keep their gut moving. That's why they are "poop machines".

Stumbled on to wheat grass when Kreacher was sick. But saw him bounce back really well with medication as well as the wheatgrass. When Neville became sick, that was the first thing we reached for after we got home from the Vet. With the medication, along with the wheat grass, Neville ate. Only hay at first, but after 5 days he started to eat pellets and hay, along with supplies of wheat grass. I could see his appetite come alive after that wheat grass.

Just think wheatgrass is important for my Z-Tribe. Something so natural, so easy to grow, seeds aren't really that expensive. I am starting to grow in little individual cups so that each of the Z-Tribe gets their own. Plus my husband also planted some patches of it in the bunny runs. They all stop at a patch to nibble.

How do you go about growing it? Sounds like something to keep on hand.

Get a pan, put some good dirt in it, and sprinkle the seeds on top, then sprinkle water. It's like growing grass. You will be amazed at how fast it grows.

I grow it year round. Something I truly believe in and helps me make my goal of a well rounded, healthy diet for the Z-Tribe.
