Here's a chart I found

http://www.calendar-365.com/moon/moon-phases.html

Hope it helps. Interesting concept as the Moon has a lot of affect on the Earth, like the affect on the ocean.

Let us know how it goes.

Glad I could help.

Hoping all goes well and in September you have LOTS of does to pick from to enhance our breeding program.

I feel your pain, but you have "buck luck" worse than I do. I'll breed two of my does on August 6th too, wonder if that will do anything.

Maybe I should send Luna down to talk to your does, lol. She gave me 4 does and no bucks. But maybe putting many bucks around your does could make your does instinctively recognize that more does are needed. Rabbits do this the wild. And truly believe because Luna was my ONLY doe and SURROUNDED by 5 other Bucks, she produced 4 does.

I don't know if that's a good science, but it could be worth a shot.

My daughter tried the breeding by the moon after her first litter was all bucks. Her next litter was one of each. But it hasn't borne out since - ours seem to fit a coin toss.

Now do all of you breed year round or just to prepare for showing? Certain time of the year, maybe twice a year?

Fingers crossed for August 6th Little Rascal. Please let us know how it goes.

Neubunny, how does the coin toss work?

Year round.
Thanks for the reply.

Know breeders who do. I'm just doing "cautious" steps right now. It's better for me to "go it slow", and my way of not "getting over whelmed". I'm making the decision to bring rabbits into the world. It's my responsibility for all of them.

Ohhh yes, you'll need to go slow at first to see how the market is in your area. You don't want to produce more than you can sell. Of course you'll probably be keeping some but most people definitely cull more than they keep... what you do to cull depends on the person though.

You'll also want to take the time to learn. I do go through times when I don't have litters for a few months, but usually I do have one or two. :)

I know cull has become a word with many meanings. I think of the word cull now and think of a rabbit that I choose not to have in my breeding program but could enhance someone else's.

Dispatch is to actually dispatch, meaning ending life humanely. I will have to deal with this word because of the "dwarf" gene. Hopefully it will never occur, but all odds say, it will, and it's a gene that must be truly thought of when deciding what breed you are going to show. I have truly thought long and hard about this "dwarf" gene and will handle it if or I should say when it occurs. I respect those who do what they do with their peanuts allowing to stay with their siblings, but I've seen suffering of innocence, and don't know if I could do that. But only time will tell.

Definitely something important to think about. Not just placing live kits.

lol - coin toss. I just meant totally random. As in usually you should get 50-50, but sometimes you flip the coins and get all heads.

Most of our breeding is for fair -- Jillian (JW) and Josh (MR) want to have juniors for fair (within a breed, they can enter one senior buck, one senior doe, one junior buck and one junior doe). Rhi didn't care to breed this year - she has more breeds (minirex, fuzzy lop, and dutch) so opted to enter 4 seniors. So we want to have enough spring babies to pick a good pair that's between 4 and 6 months old for fair. Jillian usually also does a fall breeding with an eye to the spring ARBA shows - and just to get a breeding in for young keeper does that got missed in the spring (prefer to get the first litter when does are between 8 and 12 months old) or older ones that have missed a year (don't like to go more than 18 months between litters if we plan to breed a doe again). I prefer to tag my FA's with one of the kids litters -- we always breed 2-3 does together so if something goes wrong we theoretically have a foster (in practice, typically only one doe takes, but - knock on wood - we haven't needed a foster either).

Our breeding program is really small - Jillian is on just her 6th litter of JWs (planning for #7) - that's in 4 years, Rhi's done 1 litter of MR (last year) and Josh just had his first litter of MR and I had my first litter of FA this spring.

I didn't. I ended up forgetting about it. I'm going to be slowing down on breeding now with school coming up. I just have Tu and Finch due in 3 days, then I'll see what I can handle.
