I was just wonder how everyone came to the conclusion of which breed to show. So many interesting breeds of rabbits. I never knew there were so many when I first got my two pets (Dobby & Kreacher). When I found out there were so many breeds, I started researching. Never knew I'd fall for the Lion head. Thought they were just little, unique rabbits. Plus I LOVE rooting for the Underdog. The story of the Lion head's struggle to be recognized by the ARBA tugged at my heart.

So I'm one of those "lion head" lovers hoping for success in the Keystone State in October. Many have worked hard to get this breed recognized and to that I thank you! After reading the process of getting a breed recognized, hats off to all those who worked a breed to ARBA recognition.

So was wondering what drew you to your breed.. would really appreciate any input.

Hm... well... Hollands are cute.

There's not a whole lot of different breeds in my area (at least when I started, and I didn't know how to find breeders). Hollands are pretty common, so it's what I could find nearby and that I liked. I tried several breeds after that... Mini Lops, American Fuzzy Lops, Netherland Dwarf... a couple mixed breeds. I find that the appearance of a nice Holland suits my tastes, they are a good size, they're not super hard to find and they have good personalities.

Holland have such sweet faces. And I hear so many good words about them being such sweethearts. You just have to watch regarding kindling. But I think that could be with any breed IMHO. We have lots of Holland around here and I did look at a few, but I'm more of the "upright" ear kind of person. Then I saw my first Lion head pic, and that was that.

Agree 100%, Holland are cute!

my neighbor (mom to my older daughter's best friend) was shifting from French to English angoras and my younger daughter got her first bunny from Sheri. FA's were too much for Rhi to handle -- but I fell hard for the breed. Love the size and 'multi-purpose -- plus I tend to be a sucker for 'heritage breeds' in most species.

Working with my older daughter (who settled on Jersey woolies) and ran across a photo of a chocolate tort Jersey wooly (unshowable color in JWs). Realized that beautiful chocolate and butterscoth WAS showable in FA's -- and I've been working towards them ever since (lol - just 2 years, and my first litter is only just weaned).

I saw the picture of the Polish in the Standard of Perfection ... and that was the end. I wanted one of those cute bunnies with the big huge eyes.

The choice to get Silvers was a little bit more of a rational decision-making process. (Well, sort of.) I wanted a breed that was rare and needed someone to help promote it. Silvers are not only very rare, and not only have a unique heritage and body type that no other breed can claim, but they seem to fly under the radar even among people who are trying to promote rare breeds. I liked the simplicity of the Silver breed in that it only recognized three colors, and I will always like flyback coats more than any other type.

I went through 3 other breeds before choosing Jersey Woolies... then 2 more breeds after that and decided I wanted Polish. Feel in loooove with them. Then I had to babysit some rabbits for a friend and she has red New Zealands... I love the color. Used to have Thriantas. lol She was going to sell two of her young ones (while I had them at my house for her) but I told her I was keeping them. Haha! They were just so pretty... and I missed having big rabbits. I used to breed Flemish Giants back in the day.

The reason I was drawn to the Lion heads was because of that wool. I fell in love seeing pics of Angoras. But as I was looking for a breed that was a bit smaller (space limitation) I selected the Lion head. I do love the Jersey Woolies, but the battle of the Lion head just drew me in.

Angoras are truly a "multi-purpose" rabbit. Wishing you success with your beautiful chocolate and butterscotch lines. Lovely rabbits and their wool can make such soft lovely clothing articles. Can't wait to hear how your "spinning" goes.

Love the "littleness" of the Polish.

Silvers? Never heard of them. Definitely flew under my radar.

Any pics of your Silvers?

From small to big. I have to say that's why I got my Fawkes. To experience a big bunny. And he's definitely different. Are the New Zealands easier or harder to raise than Flemish Giant?

Thanks Bumper for the education on Silvers. Wow, good for you for trying to save this Heritage Breed. The FIRST to be recognized in the USA.

Amazing. Why is there so little acknowledgement of this breed? Is it easier to go Silver Fox than Silver?

Hopefully you can get younger people involved in this breed to help it recover. Not a bad size rabbit either, 5 lbs.

Thanks again, never knew about this Silver.

There are a lot of people (and judges) that don't like Silvers, just because they are so different from most breeds that they make them uncomfortable. And, to be honest, there are some definite challenges that come with raising them. The movement to preserve rare rabbit breeds has been on the rise in the last several years, thanks to rabbits becoming sponsored by the ALBC, but for one reason or another, people didn't jump on the Silver bandwagon as fast as they have on the one for Silver Foxes, Americans, American Chins, and other breeds. So yes, Silver Foxes are much easier to find than SIlvers (and better known), and are probably a bit easier to raise, and people like their larger size for commercial purposes.

I'm taking a hiatus from breeding any bunnies at all right now till I get a few things settled in my personal life. But Powith are still my faves. B-)
